Over 60% of WW1 service records were destroyed in the WW2 blitz

Thanks CaroleW

I did know, hence why it is very difficult to glean further information.

But thanks for the reply much appreciated

Keith

What CaroleW should have said it was Ex Soldiers (Dead or Demobbed)
Not All Soldiers Service Records were held in that Repository Storeroom and therefore not Blitzed
If a Soldier served for the whole War and stayed on in the Army in the 1920s their Records were never sent  to Arnside Repository but rather the new Storeroom
What we should be asking is do you know when he left the Army ?
His 1921Census would give a clue.
If he stayed on
then Ancestry never scanned his Records
they would be in MOD Glasgow now.

I will see what I can find in the 1922 census, I suspect I will find her left the Army @1918/1919.

There are 339 Thomas Best listed in the 1922 census records and I have checked each one.  Alas not one of them is listed as serving in the Military. I am afraid I may have to leave this particular investigation as unresolved.

In need of some help,

I do not have much detail.  I have searched various databases.

I trying to search for ANY info on:

157996 Sapper Thomas Best Royal Engineers.  I have recently purchased his WW1 medals, War medal and Victory medal.

I have found his medal cards, but nothing else.

I believe  Thomas may have served with one of the many tunnelling companies.

I believe he may have been born @1890 only a guess. I am sorry but that is all I have.

I would like to put some meat on the bones, ie DOB place of birth etc.

Regards
Keith

He's a Royal Naval Chief Petty Officer from around the time of WW2.  Compare his capbadge to the one below. The stars on his collar will be blue with a letter in the centre. If we could read the letter it would tell us his branch, At a guess his medal ribbons are from the First World War, but someone more expert will be able to confirm or correct that.

Added. There is also an example below of a trade or branch badge, in this case the S stands for Supply.

Andy J2022,

Thank you for the update.

Yes it is a shame it’s a black and white picture.

Hi everyone,

I have attached a picture.

I don’t know if the person in the picture is wearing a Royal Navy or Merchant Navy uniform?

I can see he is wearing military medal ribbons.

His cap he has a badge I cannot make out which ship it belongs to.

I have tried to research the stars on his lapels.

Any help will be appreciated

Keith
