Can anyone help with a rather unusual question?
My maternal great-grandmother was very dark-skinned (and small of stature-barely 5 feet tall, apparently) by her photo's. Yet, all of her descendants show no signs of being anything but of Anglo-Saxon origin.
She was born in South Australia in 1879, to a Peter Carrington and his wife, Annie. All I know of Annie is that she is listed as "native-born", which was the terminology of the day to refer to locally born.
Is there any racial background that may not pass down the generations? My own grandmother was of fair complexion.
I have studied the photo's in my possession, and I don't believe she was of Aboriginal origin ( of course, I am happy to be proven wrong). There were Afghan cameleers in the Outback from about the 1860's, but the timeframe is slightly out.
Looking forward to hearing your suggestions.
Thanks, Darren
