Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Names of witnesses
« on: Monday 30 April 18 06:31 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please help with identifying the names of these two witnesses. I can't make out the first name, and the second one is something Dowdeswell.
Hopefully the image is large enough.
Thanks in advance.

The Common Room / Brickwall with a ray of light
« on: Saturday 28 April 18 22:43 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters,
I have a brickwall that has only just shown some light, with the help of a very clever Rootschatter. But it seems the rest of the wall remains.
I have posted on here in the past about a Mary Ann Blake, who was a widow when she married my ancestor Jonathan Dowdeswell in 1805 in London, without success. Mary Ann is my 3x great grandmother. From census and burial records, I have her birth date as c.1772.
Now, thanks to this clever Rootschatter, I have Mary Ann Palmer as the widow of John Cartwright Blake. They married in 1790 in Uplyme, Devon; for the purposes of this brickwall I am keeping details to a minimum. The connection to my Mary Ann Blake is the will of Mary Palmer of Lyme Regis in Dorset, proved 1818. In it she names her daughter, Mary Ann Dowdeswell, and her three granddaughters, whose names tie it all in.
From land tax records, we have Mrs. or Widow Palmer living in Lyme Regis from about 1797; at the same address from about 1789 to 1795 is John Palmer listed. So the assumption is John is Mary's husband. There is no appropriate burial or will to be found. There is a burial for a Mary Palmer of Lyme Regis in Sep 1816 in Comb Pyne, Devon.
Can any other clever Rootschatters please help and find more on this very elusive family.
Thanks in advance.

To the mods: I have posted here because of the two counties currently involved.

The Lighter Side / Huguenot and other research distractions
« on: Sunday 15 April 18 21:57 BST (UK)  »
I know we all can get distracted in our research sometimes when we see something of interest while looking for something else. But I have to say that when looking at the Huguenot registers of Canterbury (very kindly stored on archive.org), I have trouble staying on task. When I am searching through the registers for a particular individual, I will see someone else's entry, or as a witness, or a marriage to another ancestral surname, etc.
It's probably worse because they were a relatively small community that stuck together, but it makes for very slow progress.
Anyone else have this problem, with the Huguenots or anything else?

I have an early 17th century record from the Company of Haberdashers and it is in Latin. My Latin is a bit rusty, but the handwriting makes it difficult for me to decipher.
Can anyone please decipher the entries for Beckingham and Thomas Bentham for me?
Thanks in advance.

The Common Room / The term "master" in Walloon church records
« on: Tuesday 14 June 16 10:12 BST (UK)  »
I have seen several marriage contracts in the Walloon Church of Canterbury records that describe the groom as "assisted by (name), his master". Otherwise the records usually have "assisted by his father" (or other relative).
Does the term "master" refer to master and apprentice?

The Common Room / Innholder or innkeeper
« on: Tuesday 07 June 16 11:28 BST (UK)  »
Hello fellow Rootschatters,
Are the terms "innholder" and "innkeeper" different, or are they era-specific terms?

Thanks in advance.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1655 marriage Yorkshire
« on: Friday 20 May 16 20:58 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters,
Need some help with this one. I can make out most of it, but the bride's surname and parish or place is beyond me.
Thanks in advance.

OK. Had another look at it after a little break. The parish starts with either a B or W I think, and is possibly misspelt.

Australia / Adelaide Lying In Hospital interesting reading
« on: Tuesday 10 May 16 07:59 BST (UK)  »
I found this yesterday, and thought I should share it. Very sober reading, and personal for me as my own grandmother was born there in 1897. My great grandmother was put into service at a young age from the Industrial School.
