The Lighter Side / Which ancestral lines grab your attention?
« on: Wednesday 17 April 19 04:21 BST (UK)  »
I know we're all nuts and obsessed with genealogy and related topics, but do you find yourself drawn to one (or more) family lines over others?
I know I have over the years, both in my own and my wife's family trees. Some just seem to grab my attention and draw me to them, which of course means devoting more time to them.
I'm interested in others' thoughts.

The Common Room / Ordering documents from Kew
« on: Wednesday 13 March 19 22:18 GMT (UK)  »
I have never had cause to order copies of documents from Kew before. In the past, I have downloaded wills and other digitized documents. I have ordered copies from other archives over the years, always at reasonable cost.
Imagine my surprise when I read that there was a non-refundable charge of £8.40 just to see if the documents were in a fit state to be copied.
Highway robbery comes to mind.

The Common Room / "Singlewoman " meaning
« on: Tuesday 12 March 19 23:34 GMT (UK)  »
I have come across the above term in a will which has left me perplexed. I'd like to get the thoughts of fellow Rootschatters.
I know what it normally means, and have seen it on numerous occasions previously. However in this will, dated 1730, it mentions an ancestor as a singlewoman, yet it also names her four daughters. Normally I would think of illegitimacy, but considering they were left quite a bit of property, and the fact three of them went on to marry well, I am having doubts.
Could the term singlewoman also refer to a younger widow, or perhaps a deserted wife?
I'd appreciate any comment on this.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / LMA lookup
« on: Friday 01 March 19 05:23 GMT (UK)  »
Is there anyone who regularly goes to the LMA who could a lookup for me please?
As far as I can tell, the burials for St Stephens Coleman Street are only from 1813 onwards on Ancestry. According to the LMA website, they hold the registers for this parish.
I am seeking the burial of a John Palmer, whose will was proved in 1807. However, according to the Dorset Land Tax records, he last appears in 1797; from 1798 the listing is for Widow Palmer, and later Mrs. Palmer. I have to assume from that he died c.1797. His will says formerly of St Stephen Coleman Street but late of Lyne Regis. He is definitely not buried at Lyme Regis, so my next thought is the London parish. He may have been working in London as he was an attorney. His age would have been 53 in 1797.
Thanks in advance.

Devon / Whitlock baptisms
« on: Tuesday 26 February 19 22:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hello I am seeking help with finding the baptisms of Ann and Mary Whitlock, both of whom married in Luppitt in 1743. There are no Whitlock baptisms at all that I can see.
I have their marriages and descendants, and am seeking to find their parents. Please post replies to my other thread: https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=808782.0
Thank you.

The Common Room / Devon/Dorset brickwall
« on: Friday 22 February 19 00:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters,
I have hit a bit of a brickwall which I am posting here as it may involve more than one county. This line seemed to jump between the two named counties.
Mods feel free to move if I'm in the wrong section.
I have an Ann Whitlock marrying a  (Rev) William Palmer in 1743 in Luppitt Devon. She was his second wife. In the same year a Mary Whitlock married a Richard Harwood in Luppitt. One of the Harwood sons married one of the Palmer daughters.
I cannot find a baptism for Ann Whitlock, nor a Mary. At this point I am leaning towards them being sisters. There is no other Whitlock entries in Luppitt other than 2 later burials: Hannah in 1765, and Joan in 1779. Joan left a will in the Devon wills, which are no longer available due to bombing in 1942.
I'm hoping someone out there has access to resources I don't that might show baptisms for Ann and Mary Whitlock in wither Devon, Dorset, or possibly even Somerset.
Thanks for reading this.

The Common Room / Napoleonic era military records
« on: Wednesday 13 February 19 23:04 GMT (UK)  »
I'm posting here rather than the Armed Forces section because I have no experience in this area and am seeking guidance and advice.
I have an ancestor, John Cartwright Blake, who I cannot find a death/burial for.  I know he signed up as an ensign in 1783 in the 60th Foot, but don't know how long he served for, as he married in Dorset in 1790. He is also described as a gentleman in a 1794 land record. There is a John Blake, no middle name, signing up as an ensign in the Sherborne Loyal Volunteer Corps in 1798 His widow remarried in 1805.
Are there any records of deaths if he has died in service? I know this is a long shot, but I haven't been able to locate a burial otherwise.
Thanks in advance.

The Common Room / Delay between death and will
« on: Friday 18 January 19 03:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters,
I am after some thoughts and ideas rather than actual research help.
What possible reasons could there be for a delay of roughly 10 years before a will was proved?
I have an ancestor whose will was proved in 1807, cannot find a burial, but his wife is described as a widow from 1798 in land tax records.  He was last sighted in 1795, with no intervening years.
A possible burial place in London doesn't have extant parish records for the time and he is not buried in the town of the land tax records.
But I am mainly perplexed on the delay. The only possible thing that I can see is there were no witnesses to the will, which had been written back in 1771. The wife was the sole beneficiary and executor. Two witnesses came forward in 1807 to verify it was my ancestors signature.
Any contributions welcome.

The Common Room / Home baptism?
« on: Thursday 03 May 18 00:01 BST (UK)  »
I have found a baptism in St Stephen Coleman St London that has the capital letter H after it. All of the entries either have CH or H. I am assuming it means Church or Home.
My question is, what reasons are there for a home baptism? I understand that it occurred in the cases of sickly babies unlikely to survive, but are there any other reasons? There is no corresponding burial for this child, but it doesn't mean she wasn't sickly of course.
