Armed Forces / Advice required
« on: Saturday 23 September 06 15:21 BST (UK)  »
I have recently been in contact with a long lost relation. We differ on the parentage of a man who served in the army. The person I am in contact with believes this man to have been born in Gibraltar to a father who was a drummer in the 26th cameronians which then the son was in.

I however have information that the son was born in Leslie Fife Scotland in 1811 and joined the army later, in Fife with the 26th Cameronians. The man in question was Alexander Smith, I have asked somewhere else on this board for information on baptism in Leslie Fife and it is possible that his parents were Thomas Smith and Isabel Oswald who had two other children one named Isabella.

Alexander Smith had a daughter called Isabella Oswald. To me this means that my research is possibly correct.

I want to find out information about Alexander in the 26th cameronians, how do I do that?

Also he was in the miliata based near london later in his life. I have details of him or who I think is him for the 1861 and 1871 census. In the 1861 census Isabella O Smith his daughter lives with him and his wife. His wife is another grey area but I won't talk about that now. How do I research this?

On the census returns it says he is a Chelsea penioner, how can I find out about that?

Is this too muddly, it's confusing me so I am sure whoever reads this will be confused too.

Hampshire & IOW Completed Lookup Requests / Look up request For Hursley Hampshire

I am looking for information on a William Hickman born abt 1835 in Hursley Hants.
A Christening reference and info would be good perhaps telling me his parents names and or a marriage of said parents. (Is that too much to ask for. I apologise if it is)

On the 1841 census, assuming this is the right William, but there does not appear to be any other and it falls in with what I have further on in his life. Anyway on the 1841 census it says his mother is called Elizabeth. He has two brothers, one Stephen possibly his twin as they are the same age and James who is a year younger.

On the 1851 census, William is living with a family called Powell, it states that he is their son-in law but he is single, so I'm not sure what the relationship is except he could be the step son as the wife of the family is Elizabeth.

Any help would be welcome and I offer my thanks in advance.

Fife / Alexander Smith
« on: Friday 28 April 06 20:27 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking to find parents and siblings of an Alexander Smith I believe that he was born Leslie, Fife on the 11th Sept 1811.

He enlisted in the army on the 20 March 1827 at somewhere in Fife (as I can't read the piece of paper well, writing is old and faded)

He was in the 26th Cameroonians on foot.

He married a Hannah or Henrietta Allen (father George Allen) at Fort William Calcutta. They had as far as I know four children Thomas, Susannah, Alexander and Isabella.

I have a Alexander Smith in my tree who was born Fife Scotland in 1811.

Looking to find out more about the 26th Cameronians and his ancestors/descendants. Have some details as my husband descends of his line.

I don't really know of how to go about researching Scottish history, is it the same principal as English with parish records and the like. And also of the details of his children who were born in India and Ireland.

Also interested in his army career where at the time of his marriage he was a colour sergent

Census and Resource Discussion / Help 1901 census

Whilst on the 1901 census searching for Lily Longhurst I came across what could possibly be the girl I'm searching for. However her father is not listed, which is not surprisingly, but what baffles me is that her mother is listed as wife which suggests the husband is elsewhere at the time of the census. Under the mothers occupation it said

'Wy Of A Songhurst A Blacksmith'

Has anyone any idea what this means?

The mother is called Rose.
