I have recently been in contact with a long lost relation. We differ on the parentage of a man who served in the army. The person I am in contact with believes this man to have been born in Gibraltar to a father who was a drummer in the 26th cameronians which then the son was in.
I however have information that the son was born in Leslie Fife Scotland in 1811 and joined the army later, in Fife with the 26th Cameronians. The man in question was Alexander Smith, I have asked somewhere else on this board for information on baptism in Leslie Fife and it is possible that his parents were Thomas Smith and Isabel Oswald who had two other children one named Isabella.
Alexander Smith had a daughter called Isabella Oswald. To me this means that my research is possibly correct.
I want to find out information about Alexander in the 26th cameronians, how do I do that?
Also he was in the miliata based near london later in his life. I have details of him or who I think is him for the 1861 and 1871 census. In the 1861 census Isabella O Smith his daughter lives with him and his wife. His wife is another grey area but I won't talk about that now. How do I research this?
On the census returns it says he is a Chelsea penioner, how can I find out about that?
Is this too muddly, it's confusing me so I am sure whoever reads this will be confused too.
