Hi,

If your booklet is 'Cumbrian Ancestors' (3rd edition) it is the resource most commonly used locally, albeit printed 10 years ago.

At the time you are researching, New Hutton and Old Hutton were 2 of the 14 chapelries/townships in the Parish of Kendal which had their own churches/chapels.

Your are correct in your earlier message that the baptisms were recorded in the registers of Holy Trinity, Kendal. This is where the IGI causes confuson in that the entries from all 14 chapels appear as 'Kendal' and it does not differentiate. Unfortunately there is no alternative to checking the original Parish Records to confirm or not.

To confuse matters further, the IGI records are taken from the BTs not the PRs, and so any errors and omissions are compounded.

You will probably find that KRO will undertake a free search as long as it does not take more than 10 minutes. If you are a member of Cumbria FHS you may find someone to help or there will be other researchers who charge less than £27 / hour.

Good Luck

Chris

You are certainly in the right area. I would have thought the marriage should be nearby. I believe most marriages took place at the Parish church (Windermere or Kendal), but if the illegitimacy is correct, they could have married at one of the smaller churches. Even though there is no IGI entry for the marriage, it would probably be worth checking Hugil, Staveley, Witherslack, Winster, and Troutbeck as well.

Hi,

Is it possible that Elizabeth's son John was illegitimate rather than from a first marriage?

If so, could he have been baptised at Witherslack on 03 Nov 1809?

Hi, a gt.gt.uncle on my wife's side was found dead in the River Kent near Nether Bridge in 1904. The inquest was held in the Cock & Dolphin the following day.

I would agree that your first stop is the PRs, and the nearest church to Whinfell is at Grayrigg. Other parish entries are known to provide information about a 'supposed father'.

Kendal Record Office may do a quick search (10 mins work) for free, so they should be able to search the film for you.

I have some missing Morris' born in the Kendal area in the late 18th century. I hope he's not a decendent!!

Hi,

I have an Isabella Holme b. c.1775, married in Kendal in 1802 & her son married in Heversham 1837, but I have not been able to find a baptism for her.

Have you got an Isabella by any chance?

(I assume William was born 1771?)

Hi Harry,

Sorry, no info in and around Kendal, but if you're looking between Kendal and Lancaster there are transcripts of Warton and Bolton-le-Sands at

www.lan-opc.org.uk

If you are prepared to pay for info, see topic 'Kendal Records to buy'.

Good Hunting,

Chris

Michael,

A further thought - you may be able to check the censuses by address rather than surname. Have you checked 1841 to find the farms around the same area? If you found the farm in 1901 for instance, then you would know it disappeared afterwards. Is it possible that the farm may have survived until the M6 motorway was constructed in the mid 1960s?

Hi,

Unfortunately, I can only comment about your first question:

The construction of the West Coast main line, originally the Lancaster-Carlisle Railway, was started in 1844 and completed in 1846, so I don't think this is why High Park is no longer there. I have also searched a current OS map and have located Low Park, but no High Park.

As you already suspect, the answer will probably lie in the maps at Kendal Record Office. Have you thought about asking for a price quote from them to look at the various maps on your behalf?

Regards
