Westmorland Lookup Requests / Re: Death Look Up Hutton Roof
« on: Sunday 17 August 08 14:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

The C of E church at Hutton Roof is in the parish of Kirkby Lonsdale. Kendal Records Office has baptismal details from 1813 and marriage details from 1799 but no burial details. This could mean that either the church was not authorised for burials (unlikely), or that the register is still at the church or is missing.

It is also worth checking the parish church at Kirkby Lonsdale, as the details may have been transcribed into their records.

Good Luck

Chris

Hi Tracy,

Further to the above info, I would agree that a birth certificate for her daughter Mary would not only give you the name of Elizabeth's husband, but also her maiden name (unlikely to be Cunningham). You could then research the IGI for Kendal under the correct surname.

Good luck

Westmorland / Re: Stray Found - Iron (?) family of Morland

Hi Ashley,

I suspect that the surname is a variation of ION, which is reasonably common in different parishes throughout the county. It is also mistranscribed as JON in some parts of the IGI.

Good Hunting

Hi Jill,

It seems that there have been quite a few people down the years with both these surnames, and both are equally common in the phone book today.

The origin of the name Docker could either be from the village on the way to Grayrigg from Kendal or, if you are looking at the Milnthorpe area, from an occupation as Sandside was Westmorland's only port 200/250 years ago.

I dont know about the origin of Dowker, but there is still a Dowker's Lane in Kendal today. It may be worth investigating this further.

Try not to spill your wine on the keyboard!

Regards

Chris

Hi Odessa,

There are some transcriptions for the north of Westmorland, but unfortunately not for the main parish of Kendal as far as I know. There is one for the records of Sedbergh, so this may be worth a look.

Baptisms for the parishes of Kendal and Sedbergh are reasonably well covered on the IGI for the period you are looking at, but there is a distinct shortage of Ingrams in the area. The only possibilities I could see for 1777 were baptised in London & Bedford, so this may not help.

Have you found the apprentice record? The £70 may have been paid for by a family member or alternatively possibly a charity, trust or a church.

I shall let you know if I come across any information that may be of use.

Good luck

Chris

Hi,

Sorry, no info about Elizabeth - just a brief observation.

There is a marriage for Thomas Ingram & Elizabeth Sandwick on 11 Dec 1763 at Sedbergh, which I'm sure you will have already noticed.

As Sedbergh is only 10 miles from Kendal, it may be worth trying to find any offspring of this couple, if you have not already done so.

Did Thomas leave a will?

Good luck

Chris

Hi Tish,

John Willan of Kendal, widower & Anne Shalmerdine of Kendal, spinster were married by banns at Holy Trinity (Parish Church), Kendal on 24 September 1758 (he signed, she marked), and was witnessed by John Atkinson & Mark Burn.

Sorry Jill, I've given you duff info.

John Wood's map is 1787 (not 1767)

Hi Jill,

Another one of Patrick's grandsons, Jim, plays county cricket for Worcestershire and was on SKY SPORTS' Cricket A.M. last Saturday, but I think they come from the Midlands.

Chris
