Armed Forces / 91st Regiment of Foot - Sgt. Major John GORDON
« on: Tuesday 16 September 08 08:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have established that Sgt. Major John Gordon, who was stationed on St. Helena with the 91st in 1837, was my late husband's g-g-grandfather.  He was married to Ann? and they had a son, Joh, born on St. Helena in October 1837.  I have not been able to locate his army records, and wonder whether anyone can help with advice as to army returns etc. which may indicate the surname of his wife.  I have established that they were not married on St. Helena, and am assuming that they married in the U.K.

They may have gone to South Africa with the 91st in 1839;  their son John later became a clergyman and was stationed at the All Saints Anglican mission at Engcobo, Transkei, South Africa.  He may have been killed in the 8th Frontier War in the Eastern Cape, and I wondered whether anyone can point me in the right direction to find a possible record of his death in battle.

Thanks,

Tisy

South Africa / RONALD NETTLETON GORDON and IVY BOXALL
« on: Monday 14 April 08 05:27 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for my late husband's father.  He married Mildred Ivy Cockcroft on 31 Aug 1918 in Durban and they had four children, Daphne b. 1919, Keith (Koofy), Colin and Peter (Tinky) - dates of birth unknown.  They divorced and Ronald then married Ivy Boxall, my late husband's mother, and they had two children, Raymond Garth Gordon b. 1942 and Margaret (Cheyne) b. about 1944.  Ronald Nettleton died when Raymond Garth was five years old, so we never did know too much about him.  Am looking for links with his first family, as well as any info on his parents.  Also Ivy Boxall had two sisters, Doris and Edith.  I think their mother was a Pautz, but am not sure.  The Boxalls were from King William's Town and I think this is where Ronald Nettleton Gordon died.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tisy

« on: Tuesday 08 April 08 02:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Could someone please look up a marriage between Abraham Wild and Ann Thornton in Manchester Cathedral on 19th March 1810 for me.

What would I need to do to get a copy of the record if found?

Many thanks,

Tisy

Researching origins of Abraham Wild, born Oldham about 1788-90 who emigrated to South Africa in 1820 with Stanley's party aboard the "John" from Liverpool.  He has his wife, Ann Thornton, and children Richard (18??), Betty (about 1811), Abraham (1813), Maria (1816) and Henry (1819) with him.  Trying to find out who his parents were and there are unfortunately several possibilities as there were a few Abrahams born around that time.  They seem to have been Methodists and were mostly baptised at the Shaw Chapel.

Any ideas?

South Africa / 1820 Settler Migration to South Africa
« on: Monday 07 April 08 01:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

My ancestor, Abraham Wild, born Oldham about 1989/1790 and his wife Ann Thornton, emigrated to South Africa in 1820.  They sailed on the "John" from Liverpool in January 1820.  I wondered whether it would be possible to obtain records in relation to this migration, possibly showing dates of birth/christening and names of parents or an address.

Lancashire / Wild Family History
« on: Tuesday 01 April 08 03:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi to all the Wild ones.  I am descended from Abraham Wild (b. about 1790) who arrived in S.Africa with the 1820 Settlers on the ship the "John".  I have a lot of info on his descendents in South Africa, but am trying to establish a link to the U.K. ancestors.  He and his wife Ann Thornton came from Oldham, Lancashire, and were probably from the area of Shaw and Crompton.  He was described in the Ship's records as being a labourer.  Info which I received from the 1820Settlers.com website is that his father was James Wild (b. about 1750) and his mother was Mary Buckley (b. about 1760).  I can find absolutely no marriage records either in the Lancashire Parish records or on IGI.

I have however found a James Wild (b. 1761) and Mary Wild (b. 1765) both of Shaw, Oldham, (could have been cousins I suppose) who had a son Abraham in 1790.

Does anyone out there have any other info for me?  I would be glad to share any info I have.

Regards

Tisy
