Hi Sorcha

The 1861 census references for Greenacres Hill are -
RG9/3020 folio 82 page 1 - District 24
RG9/3021 folio 4 page 1 - District 25

In the district descriptions they mention Greenacres Hill which is in the Waterhead Mill area of Oldham Above Town

Hope this helps

Hi Frank

I found this Cheetham family on the 1841 census Living at Union Ground
Bradley Cheetham 40 Shoe M
Margret Cheetahm 40
Mary Cheetham 17 Cotton Winder?
William Cheetham 11
All born in County
HO107/547/4 f8 p9

Peggy = Margaret,

Union Ground ran between two streets Brunswick St and Hobson St which were both off Union St (this information was found in the book Going Going Gone Disappearing Oldham by Roy Moses)
If you look on a presant day map Union Ground was where Pheonix St is now.

Hope this helps

Added - Cheetham was transcribed as Chutlan

Hi Anne

I have taken a couple of photo's for you the area is totaly differant now to what it once was, directly opposite your great grandparents house is now a grassed area which is where Drury Lane school was.

Turf lane is still terraced housing which were built mainly in the 1880's, there was a few knocked down a few years ago and new houses built in place of them, but it's mainly the old terraced houses.

There are no farms left now they all went years ago, before my time, there is still a farm house near to where i live it was built in 1905, it's now a residential home for the elderly. The farm was called Yew Trees, the land which was once part of the farm is a housing estate which was built just after the 2nd world War.

I have a map of the area dated 1916, if you pm me your email address i can send you a copy

Hi Anne

I have just checked the Royal Mails post code finder and 1a Eli St still exists, it's about a 5 minute walk away from where i live.

I remember i used to play round there when i was a child with some friends from school i would imagine about the  late 1960's, all the terraced houses were knocked down in the 1970's i think.

The house that you are looking for wasn't a typical terraced house, on the corner of Eli St there was a Co op Store and 1a Eli St was attached to it, i think it's a 3 storey building it's the only one of the old houses left. In place of the terraced houses there are now council flats (2storey) for the elderly.

I will go and take a photo for you in the next couple of days.

Regards
Sal

Hi

I have an old map of Oldham which shows Grimshaw St, Oldham. It was more or less facing the One in Three public house.
The One in Three is facing the Civic Centre near to where the newest part of the bus station is now on West St. (hope that makes sense)
