Lancashire / John Edward Copley Joel
« on: Sunday 04 September 11 21:23 BST (UK)  »
John Edward Copley Joel was born in Sheffield in 1864,He appears on the 1881 census - in Sheffield- occupation - Clerk at coal office, this is the last census I have found him on.
There is a marriage in Chorlton Lancashire in 1886 of a John E C Joel, and this is the last mention of him I can find.
I would really appreciate any guidance on this issue,as without any further census details or a death record it leaves a gap in the family tree.
Kind regards Brian H.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / The Hartley family-Ovenden area- brickwall
« on: Tuesday 16 August 11 19:15 BST (UK)  »
I am now well and truly stuck with my direct line, despite numerous attempts to obtain details of my 4x great grandfather David Hartley b 1772 in Ovenden (parents),although I am led to believe his father was a David Hartley b 1754 in Wheatley.
I am fully aware of David Hartley's ( b 1772) wife and  the Hartley family right through to present times.
David Hartley b 1772 ,was a none conformist,I know I am getting very repetitious on the issue, but how might I proceed in my quest to locate David Hartley's  (B 1772)siblings and parentage ?.
Any guidance would be of great value, kindest regards Brian H.  ???

Yorkshire (West Riding) / John Hartley and Sons cutlery manufacturers - Sheffield
« on: Monday 15 August 11 19:29 BST (UK)  »
My great grandfather - John Hartley b  21/03/1823 Rastrick -moved to Sheffield in the early to mid 1840s.
By trade he was a cutlery maker, and soon founded a successful business in Sheffield.
I would dearly love to know more about the inception of the business it's final demise.
I am aware that the main part of the business invlolved Dasy works at daisy walk Sheffield, and letterheads suggests involvement with wolstenhome Youle.
This is a real mystery, how can an apparently successful established business fold, despite years of hard work,my great grandfather died penniless on 11/03/1898 at one of his sons home- 14 Dover road Sheffield.
There are so many accusations as to what caused the business to collapse.
I am aware of a fire at Daisy works which woudn't have been very helpful,as it was apparently quite bad.and the workmans tools were not insured.
I would really appreciate any help with this enquiry.
Kind regards Brian H.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Reasher Poppleton b 1892 - Hunslet Leeds
« on: Saturday 13 August 11 15:27 BST (UK)  »
I have a real problem locating the above on the 1901/1911 census.
I believe the problem lies with the fact that  this christian name is unusual, and clearly misrepresented,in particular on her marriage to Arthur Jackson in Hunslet Leeds in 1919.
I was advised by a relative of Reashers that she died in 1975,yet a public tree on Ancestry suggests otherwise.
Any guidance would be of real value.
Kindest regards Brian H. ;)

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Fred Hartley - marriage to Amelia Bottomley 1871 Halifax
« on: Monday 01 August 11 19:45 BST (UK)  »
I am stuck on an issue regarding Frederick Hartley's wife- Amelia (Bottomley)
I always understood -that her maiden name was Bottomley,on the 1871 census she is with her husband (Fred)- son in law, and is down as Amelia Rayner.
The 1871 census shows her mother as - Adaline Rayner and father as Thomas Rayner.
Fred Hartley was b 1849 in Rastrick and his wife Amelia b in 1850- in Clifton.
Any guidance on this issue would be really appreciated.
Kindest regards Brian H. ;)

Yorkshire (West Riding) / David Hartley b 1754 -Wheatley Ovenden
« on: Friday 29 July 11 18:23 BST (UK)  »
I am attempting to determine a link between David  Hartley b 1754,and another David Hartley b 1772 in Ovenden.
I believe that the David b in 1772 Ovenden ,had a Father with the same christian name b 1754.
I am also interested in any potential links to either (David),such as siblings.
I know I have seemingly exhausted the quest for more on my Hartley family.
I am well and truly stuck for ideas,on how to  progress, any guidance or suggestions would be very much appreciated,
Kindest regards Brian. ;)
