Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Reducing file size
« on: Saturday 25 November 06 13:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I have read Cazza's tutorial but I still have a problem.
I scanned a photo recently before reading this excellent advice.
The photo was taken in June on a disposable camera at a wedding. This was the last photo taken of my Mum because she died in August. I was hoping to improve the photo and frame it to give to Dad at Christmas. I have Microsoft Picture It and Ifranview . I need to reduce the file size but still don't know how. Any advice much appreciated.

The Lighter Side / State of Cemetries
« on: Tuesday 03 October 06 13:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi
My mum died recently and a few weeks previously she expressed a wish to visit her grandma's grave. My Dad took her to the cemetery but she was upset she couldn't find the grave. The grave didn't have a headstone only a pot. I was certain I would be able to find the grave because I went regularly with grandma and granddad when I was young, however to be sure I e-mailed the cemetery and got the plot number and map.
I went to visit Dad at weekend and visited the cemetery, I was able to find the plot but was disgusted at the state of the graves, it seems the council have been following the health and safety policy and pushing the gravestones to check they are safe!! This has resulted in what looks like the majority of headstones being pushed over.
What particularly annoyed me was the pot had been moved from my g,grandma's plot and the headstone from the grave behind had been pushed onto my g.grandma's grave, covering it completely.
The whole cemetery looked as if hundreds of vandals had run riot. I found it very upsetting.
The following day I went to visit my paternal grandparents grave, a different cemetery and a different local authority and the same thing has happened there.
The councils are desecrating these places and it seems like we can do nothing about it .
What do fellow rootschatters think?

The Common Room / Presevation

Perhaps people have ideas.  My mother passed away recently and I have been sorting through all types of documents, letters, photos certificates etc. My father has things from WW2 eg leaflets dropped by Germans encouraging people to surrender. I feel these should be saved but how do I do this? I have thought about scanning and saving to CD,but what is he best way to preserve the originals? Does anyone have any recommendations about the companies who advertise albums etc? I would love to hear your views.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / A Challenge

I have a photo of Dad taken early in WW2 while he was training in Scotland. He was in the RE. He was one of the so called "D-Day dodgers". In 1978 I was living in Scotland and took mum and dad to visit the place this photo was taken. I took a photo of them both sitting in this exact spot. Mum passed away recently and I would love to be able to give dad both photos looking good.

Forgot to say dad is the one sitting front right with his legs crossed.

The Lighter Side / Grave Hunting
« on: Sunday 23 July 06 15:54 BST (UK)  »
Just thought I would share the tale of our successful outing. Hubby had to do a some jobs for his Dad so we decided to spend a couple of days in Northumberland.
On the first day, after completing the jobs we started asking about where relatives may be buried. Hubby's dad told us where hubby's maternal grandparents were buried. Ever the optimist, we set out early the following morning armed with flowers and bottles of water! We found the graveyard and proceeded to walk up and down the rows. After about 20 mins we found the grave of my husband's g.uncle. About an hour later we discovered the grandparents grave,we tidied the grave, put the flowers in water in the urn and took a photo. My husband who isn't very interested in family history was very moved. His maternal grandparents died before he was born, he felt that his mother(who died 8 years ago) would have been pleased.
We carried on walking around the churchyard and we took photos of other graves with names of people who could be related.Right at the very end we found the grave of his g.grandparents. Again we tidied and placed flowers.
At the pub next door to the graveyard we enjoyed a lovely drink and sandwich while we downloaded the pictures onto the laptop.
The weather was fantastic and we had both enjoyed our visit.  When we returned to visit father-in-law in the afternoon he mentioned that he knew which cemetery other relatives were buried!!Why do they have to dripfeed info!!! So hopefully we will be able to explore again.

I've had quite a few contacts from people on GenesReunited lately and thought it might be a good idea to promote RootsChat in my replies. (because I think it's brill ;D)
My questions are
Is there already a link/logo that I could use?
Is this accepted practice on the Genes Reunited site or would I be struck off ???

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Where was Septima in 1901?
« on: Tuesday 28 February 06 20:07 GMT (UK)  »
Ive looked and looked but cannot see :(
Septima Hickman  born 1889 Cambois Northumberland. In 1891 living with family at 34 Bridge St  Cambois. It seems she married in 1909 but I cannot find her in 1901.
I have checked all of the siblings in 1901 apart from Sarah Hickman born 1881, and it looks like she(Sarah) married a John Elliott or Joseph Hodgetts in 1899.
Where was Septima in 1901?
At 12 I suppose she could be working as a servant ???
Perhaps she could have decided she did not like her name ;D
Is she staying with sister Sarah ???
I need help!
