Dublin / Re: Dublin marriage 1839/40
« on: Wednesday 01 April 09 23:59 BST (UK)  »
No luck so far Pat. My gggrandfather was in the Army. enlisted in Ireland in 1833.
I did look at the irish Familuy History Index but at 5 euros per go its costly and I believe
they don't have a lot of records for Dublin.
Another suggestion and recommended was an Army researcher  www.richardmoles.com
I looked up the site and its on the GRO recommened list of researchers. This guy will give you a free
no obligation quote apparently. One chatter said his ancestor's records cost him 40 Euros in total.
So may well be cheaper than paying the GRO people. You didn't say if your guy was in the Army.

Thanks OBBIE.  That looks promising and certainly cheaper than visiting - I am in Brisbane
Australia! I'll investigate.
And again thanks for your trouble. appreciated.  John

Obbie - Many thanks for trying for me. I've no idea where he live unfortunately. I do know his regiment and when he enlisted in the Cheshire regiment and I have his army testimonials. About his service records - how easy is it to get them. Do I go through
the GRO' I am still trying to learn about all this - its all a bit of a mystery

Thanks for the advice. Have been having a look at the Irish family history site - does look expensive at first
glance - looks like about $10 for each look! Makes Findmypast look like a bargain!

Dublin / Roe-Woods marriage, Dublin
« on: Tuesday 24 March 09 07:44 GMT (UK)  »
I am still trying to locate a marriage for my Great great grandparents prior to embarking for India from Gravesend(Jan 1841)
with the Cheshire regiment - based in Dublin until Dec 1840

So I would expect a marriage in 1840  hopefully in Dublin. Their first child was born in India in 1841

William Roe  b. 1816

Catherine Woods b. 1821

I have checked for a UK marriage with no result.

I know Ireland is not easy but any help would be most appreciated.

The Common Room / Shipping records France to South Africa
« on: Monday 23 March 09 08:42 GMT (UK)  »
I was taken to Cape Town South Africa after my birth in London 4.635 by my Mother Frances Rose Stevens.
The problem is I can't find any shipping record from the UK. or back from SA to the UK before 1937.
I am just wondering if the trip was from a Mediterranean port  maybe Marseilles the most likely. Are any records possible?
Air travel would not seem likely in those days?
Does anone have any suggestions.

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Re: Channel Islands Census
« on: Thursday 12 March 09 00:06 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Karenlee I do have them on the 1881 Census and again in the 1891
census, but now without Caroline. In fact I can't find any of them after the '91
census - 9 of them in all!

And Hill thank you - yes I reckon it will be Alderney as you suspect.
