I remember seeing somewhere in my travels on the tinternet that one of my relations (surname Earle) had been a Mayor in the Liverpool area.

It may have been around Prescot/Huyton, Knowsley or West Derby, not sure, but haven't been able to find it since no matter what search criteria I use.

Anyone got any ideas?

This part of the forum is amazing - can't believe all the posts regarding occupations.

I'm trying to find out a little about a John Valentine, who was born in Kassel, Germany in 1824. He was working as a tailor in Mile End Old Town, E London in 1871 & 1881.

Does anyone know of any means of identifying him or where he might have worked, apart from the census info which I already have?

I would be really grateful if someone could look in the 1861 census for Mile End Old Town for a John Valentine, born 1824 in Germany.

From previous research I've got 2 possible addresses: either 4 Calverley Street, Mile End or 3 Zion Square.

From previous research I've got 2 possible addresses: either 4 Calverley Street, Mile End or 3 Zion Square.

I'm particularly interested to find out who else was living at the same address, and their places of birth.

Hi all

I'm looking for a John Valentine who was born in Hessen, Germany in 1824.

He shows up in the 1871 Census living at 4 Calverley Street, Mile End Old Town, and again in the 1881 Census living at 3 Zion Square, London, Middlesex with his son John jr, b.1862 and his female servant Jn Miller, who was German & married.

I can't find any trace of either of the street names, or any other reference to either of the John's. When did Sr come to the UK? Who was Sr's wife? When did Jr move to Eccleston, Merseyside (he married a local girl in Jan 1889)?

Although I've become fairly proficient at finding Lancashire sites, I'm floundering with London!

I know someone's gonna be able to point me in the right direction, so thanks in advance  ;)
