Aberdeenshire / Re:My Aberdeen surnames Robertson
« on: Monday 03 May 04 18:43 BST (UK)  »
I too am researching a Joseph Robertson.  I recently received a possibility, reported to be from the IGI British Isles section.    I am grasping at straws!
"Joseph Robertson
Male family.  Parents names, Joseph & Agnes Pirie,
Joseph Robertson, male Christening 17 Mar 1776, Rhynie And Essie, Aberdeen, Scotland".

As my "Joseph Rainey Robertson, b. 1760-1780 in Scotland"  married a Susannah Johnson, b. 1760-1780 (no location known) on 24 Nov. 1795 in Madison Co., KY, the date above is a good possibility.
His marriage certificate lists him as Robinson, but all 8 children are named Robertson.  Probably a clerical error.
I would appreciate if someone locally could check the references, and help me confirm/or deny that the above
Joseph Robertson is or isn't mine.
Any informaiton will be greatly appreciated, and I will gladly share what I have on my Joseph and his children.

thank you,
JOhn Robertson

United States of America / Scotland, Joseph Rainey Robertson
« on: Thursday 29 April 04 14:56 BST (UK)  »
I am at a standstill on my ancestor, "Joseph Rainey Robertson 1760-1780, born in Scotland"
I have him married in Madison Co. KY Nov 24th 1795 to a Susannah Johnson.  I would "guesstimate" his birth about 1775, from his marriage.
Possibilities are:
   1.    Joseph Robertson, male, christening 17 Mar 1776,
         Rhynie and Essie, Aberdeen, Scotland.

   2.   Joseph  Robertson, Birth:  11 JUN 1774,  Hamilton,
         Lanark, Scotland.

His 8 known children were:
1.   Elizabeth, b. 1790-1810,
2.   *JOHNSON ROBERTSON, b. 1790-1810 in Madison or
Bourbon Co. KY.   d. 02-19-1864 in Liberty, Clay Co.
       MO, m. **(Mary)Polly A. Langston d. 03-16-1829 in
       Bourbon Co. KY
Male descendants down to me: gggf., Johnson, ggf., Allan,
gf., Harry ,  f., Raymond C. Robertson, myself,
      John  William Robertson
3.   ***Mahala, b. 01-02-1816 m. Henry Livingston in
     Bourbon Co. KY
4.   Mark, b. 1790-1810
5.   Mary Ann, b. 1820 in KY, m. James R. Johnson 1839 in
      Versailles, Riply Co. IN
6.   Solomon Rainey, b. 1790-1810 m. Eliza Wilson 04-01-
1837 in Paris, Bourbon Co. KY
7. James R., b. 06-08 1798 in Madison Co. KY d. 01-07-1883
      in Shelbyville, Shelby Co. KY
8. William b. 1803, (Madison Co. KY ??)

We have no idea why, when, how, or where he left Scotland, nor do we know where, how or when he arrived in the USA.
If anyone can help, it will be greatly appreciated, and we will share all that we have on the family.
Thanks, John Robertson

Lanarkshire / Re:Genealogy, Scotland Robertson/Robinson

I am wondering if there is someone in Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland who can lookup the following and see if the listed Joseph Robertson had the middle name of Rainey so I can confirm he is the right one?  Or confirm he isn't the one I need!
NOTE:  On his marriage Lic. 24/26 Nov 1795, he was listed as ROBINSON, so may have been a Robinson.
However, all children have the name of Robertson

Lanarkshire / Genealogy, Scotland Robertson/Robinson
« on: Sunday 18 January 04 23:14 GMT (UK)  »
This is my first try at Roots Chat.  I have tried every place else to find my elusive Scotsman.
It looks sort of like Roots Chat is oriented mostly towards England and Ireland, but I will poke around and see.
My problem is that I have a Scotsman who can't be found, tho I have to admit that  I don't have much to go on.
I did find a possible in Lanarkshire, from the IGI, but can't get much from that.  No family listed and just the parents, while I don't know if the Lanarkshire reference is really the one I am chasing.
I have his 8 descendants, and wife.  Otherwise it's like a UFO dropped him off and they got married in Madison county, Kentucky on 24 Nov 1795.

How, why, when or where he arrived in the United  States I have no idea.  He could have come via Canada for all I know.  Not having a specific location of birth, or Emigration from Scotland, I have nothing to go on, other than "Joseph Rainey Robertson (or Robinson?) born 1760-1780, in Scotland."  I don't even have anything on what he did for a living.
With the Rob'son prediliction for changing the spelling of their names at will, he is definitely a mystery.
His wife, Susannah Johnson b. 1760-1780 - no birth location, is as "invisible" as he is.
However, on Susannah, I am beginning to wonder if she may have been of the Cherokee people.  The reason I am wondering this, is the name Johnson is fairly common among  the Cherokee, and the name Mahala was a popular name for Cherokee girls.  AND! they named one of their daughters Mahala!!!!.
It appears that the Scots often married among the Native American tribes.
If any one has any suggestions, I am wide open for them.
I will check on this site as often as I can get back, or an Email is fine, and probably better.
Thanks, John
