Australia / 1873 Victorian Birth Certificate
« on: Monday 14 May 12 06:46 BST (UK)  »
I have located the birth certificate of an ancestor, Ann Price, born Sept 1873 in Newtown, Scarsdale, Victoria and find some information on it that I have never come across before.

In the area for the informant it shows her mothers name & residence and then the words "after declaration made and by law required".

Would this be noted in place of a signature or mark that is usually the case? Or, is there some other meaning/reason behind this?

Any assistance/ideas from Rootschatters appreciated.

Sorry, I don't have a copy of the marriage....only the knowledge of when & where....as you mention OL of Reconciliation in Liverpool.

Mary herself was the informant for young Thomas's 1857 birth (she didn't register him until March 1858) so she would have given the information about father Thomas being a sailor. While he may have been a sailor....he may not have been 'working' the passage.

She must have been game to marry another seaman (as was Hans)!!

Young Thomas' birth certificate for 1857 lists his father Thomas as 'Sailor' deceased. Thomas (senior's) death certificate doesn't list an occupation.

Florence Mary Byrnes/Burnes is actually Hans Olsen's mother......not his wife. I've now had a look and that tree and it shows several errors.

Yes, the Boroondara family come into mine elsewhere. It's a tricky thing with 2 Mary Byrne's and son Christopher at very similar timelines.

There's obviously no 'morph' from Thomas to Christopher.....different kiddies.

Thanks again to one and all.

Mary herself was the informant.
Thanks everything for your input and thoughts. Much appreciated.

Fair point Leonie.......if only things were consistent. I have 2 other incidents where the older sibling from the first marriage is listed.

Mary CHURCH (nee BYRNS) married again in in 1861 - just a few months prior to John being born in 1861. I've never been able to find a birth for Chris. Also, I've never been able to trace young Thomas CHURCH - no suitable death certificate and he is not mentioned in the family records......it's one of the reasons I thought he may have 'morphed' into Chris.

Young Thomas seems to turn into Christopher. Christopher is a documented name from the new husbands family history as well. There are no suitable Christopher's born in that period.

In April 1857, Thomas Lewis CHURCH (Sailor - 28yrs) and his new bride, Mary (18 yrs) sailed on the ‘Blanche Moore’ from London to Victoria, Australia. Two months into the voyage Thomas went missing at sea. In December that year in Melbourne, young Mary gave birth to their first (and obviously only) child, registered as Thomas.

The mystery starts 4 years later after Mary marries again and gives birth to her second child, John. On John’s birth certificate it lists one older sibling living (none deceased), but the name of the older child is different. The child went by this 'new' name for the remainder of his life. Would Mary and her new husband have been legally required to change the infant’s name? If so, does anyone know if these types of records are available to the public?

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Hi Sue,

These are all new names to me. I haven't come across them before. I'll check with a couple of other family members to see if they know more.

Kind regards,
Jeff
