Australia / Re: Lookup - 'Jamberoo Cemeteries NSW' booklet - Thomas HAMPTON
« on: Monday 25 February 13 04:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hello JM,
Yes, that is my Thomas....ex 'Hilton' and died on Wallace's property. Menzies was the Coroner; he lived next door to the Wallace property. Thomas survived for only 4 hours after the accident and I suspect he would not have been moved far afterwards. The Kiama FHG has previously informed me they do not have a complete copy of the Jamberoo Cemteries booklet, hence my hopes that a rootschatter has a complete copy. Dr. Menzies' official reports for the period are no longer available, nor have I been able to find any of his personal notes. The local Anglican Church has not been able to assist either.

I have previously checked the cemetery index pages for the area. Only the Catholic cemetery seems to have been in operation at the time of Thomas' death. I do not believe there would have been enough money available to the family for a headstone anyway; they'd only been in the country for 6 weeks or so (arriving under an assistance scheme). The family may not have been with him in the area when he died...they certainly didn't settle there.

I had a 'long shot' hope that the booklet may include him somewhere.

Your comments (as always) appreciated!!
Jeff

Australia / Lookup - 'Jamberoo Cemeteries NSW' booklet - Thomas HAMPTON
« on: Monday 25 February 13 01:02 GMT (UK)  »
Dear Rootschatters,
I am hoping someone may have a copy of the booklet 'Jamberoo Cemeteries NSW' and would kindly check and see if there is a listing for the burial of Thomas HAMPTON in 1855. Thomas was killed in Jamberoo by a falling tree in November of that year. Thomas, known to be CofE had recently arrived in Australia on an assistance scheme. Despite extensive research I'm still unable to locate his actual place of burial.
Any assisatnce greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,
Jeff

Australia / Shipping Crew Lists - Victoria
« on: Friday 22 June 12 04:59 BST (UK)  »
Dear Rootschatters,

I've been going around in circles trying to find crew lists for ships arriving in Victoria in the 1850's. I'm specifically looking for a Hans OLSEN. I know he was a Mariner on board 'Peter Goddefroy' via Adelaide to Melbourne in Dec 1855, but I am trying to find other vessels he may have arrived on - one in particular, the 'Blanche Moore' arriving in Victoria in July 1857.

Any advice on where I might find this information would be very much apprecaited.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

Oh I don't know, you managed to remove all the creases and such. Mary looks better. It's a hard one I know. The file is a jpg.

Thanks all for your assistance. I'll 'completed' the post.

Much apprecaited,
Jeff

Thank you. Both have brightened mary up a bit. I've just been sent another copy of the photo, it seems clearer but it's TINY. I'm posting it for no other reason that I am able to.

Thanks again,
Jeff

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / 'Photo' restoration request please

Dear Rootschatters,

I wonder if anyone can possibly do something with this 'photo' I have recently received of my old Irish ancestor, Mary Burns. The original photo seems lost these days and this is a scan of a photocopy so I'm not sure how well it can be done. I would appreciate any attempt though. Mary died at 85yrs in the mid 1920's.

Thanks in advance.
Jeff

Australia / Re: 1873 Victorian Birth Certificate
« on: Tuesday 15 May 12 03:55 BST (UK)  »
Baby Ann was present for the registration - 2 months to the day after she was born.

I have checked some other certs where the registration was several months after the fact, baby present in some, not in 2 instances though...none have this 'declaration'. All these are registered by one of the parents.

Thanks again.

Thank you for your input everyone. Glad to hear this is not as unusual as I thought. I have quite a few Vic birth certs and have never seen it before. Checking this certificate (alone on the page), I note that there were no witnesses present when the mother registered the birth....2 months after the event.

The other details on the certificate are very detailed as well. Possibly, the Registrar, Walter Campbell was just one of those people that dot his i's and cross his t's. It's better than some other certs I have where I sure they must have been about to go to lunch and scribbled indecipherably!!

Cheers.
Jeff
