Hi Hope you can help me, I am just about at my wits end

My ISP server was down for ages today and when I finally managed to get back on late afternoon, had problems.  When I went to connect to the internet my egg timer came up and stayed that way for quite a while.....  rang my ISP who suggested that my router was the problem and to try the modem back in the computer.   Hey presto it went fine.    So I tried reconnecting the laptop to the computer and I got the egg timer just sitting there still trying to connect.  so I rang my ISP again, I am told  that they could not help me ... and to ring my routers help desk.   But when you are put to a different country and can hardly understand  the person, you feel like tearing your hair out.    At the moment my modem is in the computer ... I just would like  to get the laptop up and running again and smooth sailing without getting the page come up with "Internet Explorer Can Not Display The Page"  butting in  when I am middle of posting.

I am sure I had to enter in a certain number on the PC

Any help appreciated.

Hi ..... This photo was pasted on to one of those pocket size tin frames 7cm by 8cm that was around many years ago.   Can you do anything with it please?   I apologise if the scan has compressed it a bit.

Hi...... after a few hiccups I finally got the laptop up and running ....  I did have to resort to asking my ISP technie for help because the PC sat on Internet Explorer with the egg timer for 3 hours   So it was a matter of restarting all over again

Question is does my PC have to be on so I can use the lap top in another room?   or do I have to get one of those whatsit cards for the lap top.

Sorry if I come across as a dill brain here ....My OH has said that I can get a laptop ....... there are so many out there ...... and at different prices.    My friend purchased one ...... paid top $ for it and said Sony was the best.      I don't want  state of the art one or pay top $ ..... just a nice simple one to use for my needs,  so that I can keep the old fellar company in the evenings.

The thing is my other half is not technology minded and I don't want the salesperson thinking he has a couple of lemons and talk us into something I don't really want, and would like to have some background knowledge before purchasing one. What is the difference between a cheaper model as opposed to an expensive one etc  As I live in a rural area ..... my connection is broadband with a two way satellite system,  so have to take that into consideration I guess as well.

Any advice would be appreciated.
