World War One / Naval Help Required
« on: Thursday 24 March 16 16:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I've been looking at some dispatches today from the Battle of Jutland.

I've seen the following abbreviations.  Could anyone tell me what they stand for? (Some are obvious)
Flags, L/T, W/T, S/L, Sem

Also, could some v knowledgeable person tell me during the battle how did the ships communicate with each other.  I'm sure I read somewhere that it was by  flags or semifore but now I cannot find that source that suggested this.

Finally - !  Does anyone know how many radio telegraphers might be on a battleship?

Thanks

The Lighter Side / After 42 years finally declared dead -wonder how this would be indexed?
« on: Wednesday 03 February 16 15:15 GMT (UK)  »
Have just seen an online article about Lord Lucan finally being declared dead.

Even though Lord Lucan was officially declared dead by the High Court in 1999, there have been reported sightings in Australia, Ireland, Africa and New Zealand, and even claims that he fled to India and lived life as a hippy called "Jungly Barry".
Lord Bingham argued that the 1999 declaration had not proved death "for all purposes" and the new Presumption of Death Act allowed for a "more complete process".

I wonder where this would appear in the BMD index?

I love the bit about "Jungly Barry"   ;D

Technical Help / Being bombarded with spam
« on: Monday 04 January 16 21:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am getting bombarded with horrible spam.  >:(  Far, far more than normal. My filters are set on HIGH and I've also re-set for only those email addresses I know to get through.  And still every 5 mins or so I'm getting spam into my normal email folder.  No spam is going into the spam folder.  Anyone know how the spam is getting through?  How can I stop this?

Also,Every time  a spam item comes through I mark it as spam,it goes into spam box and then I perm delete.

Ireland / Help please! Where is the transcribed version of Old Age Pension 1841/51?
« on: Tuesday 29 December 15 21:24 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me I've been particularly stupid.  At the end of Oct/early Nov I happened to find and was searching a transcribed version of the 1841/1851 Old Age Pension.  I've been searching for any information on my 2x great-grandmother.  Lo and behold I think I found a lead on the pension information (as a member of her family must have put in for a claim). I couldn't believe my luck. :)  But, I got busy and thought I would go back to it at a later date (which is now)  :-[

However, I don't appear to have book marked the website or database or whatever!! where the information came from!  :(  I can tell you where it is not:  Ancestry, FindMyPast, Rootsireland, Family Search.  Whilst all these have information and some you can see an original form - this was a transcribed page that included the whole family, in some instances gave the mother's maiden name, and also listed the townland details of the family.

I'm hoping someone else has found and used this information and could tell me where it is. I'm going demented trying to think where it came from  :'(

Thanks

Technical Help / Is this possible? Legacy into Dropbox
« on: Tuesday 22 September 15 14:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I'm about to go away for a few days to do some research.  I would like to access the family tree I have been working on remotely.

I have been using a (free)version of Legacy and what  I would like to do is 'drop' the Legacy family tree into Dropbox and then access from my ipad when I am away.

I understand that I would have to buy a 'Families' app and load onto my ipad however, would this work?

Thanks

I wonder if it's down to people using online genealogy sites differently than they might have done originally.

For example, 10 or more years ago, someone seriously into family history might have only posted a tree that had been proven to whatever level of satisfaction fulfilled his or her purpose.

Genealogy used to be more costly, more difficult and more time-consuming, perhaps thereby limiting its attractiveness to some. Remember how patient you used to have to be if you were writing letters and waiting for replies from other countries?

But now the vast amount of information available online, and the ease with which it can be added to one's tree, has perhaps contributed to lowering the former standards of proof while at the same time making it much easier to engage in the hobby.

In addition, people use the internet now as their storage and back-up for working documents, photos, etc., so it probably makes sense to many to also use the internet for their trees, whether they are works in progress or as complete as they can be.

Hi Josephine,

Thanks for your post - I would certainly agree with this statement.
