Ireland / Irish birth & death certificates plus rules for burial in Ireland
« on: Tuesday 31 March 15 18:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I wonder if someone could possibly answer the following questions:

Would an Irish bc record if a baby was a twin?

Is it unusual for a child to be registered with one name and baptised with another?

Why no death registrations?  What was the law with regard to burials? Many of the deaths I am looking for have no dc.  It seems to be a lucky dip if I find both a Church burial entry + dc, a dc only or a Church burial entry. Sometimes none of the above if the person was a child or baby. The dates I am looking for vary between 1850's - 1900.  (Note: I do realise prior to 1864 there would be no civil reg.)

What was the custom with regard to burials?

Thanks for your assistance

Derry (Londonderry) / Help finding Maghera families (Donnelly)
« on: Friday 20 March 15 10:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

I continue with my Irish family research and am making some great progress.  However, I now need to either rule in or rule or the following families.  I thought I would make a post here and see if these people may ring a bell with someone.  If not now perhaps someone will run into this post in the future.

Here are the families:
Francis Donnelly and Catherine Corcoran (McCoriorson) m. 1837 Ballinascreen
Children: Daniel, Francis, Margaret  (perhaps there were others??)
Baptised in the parish of Maghera

John Donnelly and Mary Grant (McGrant) m. unknown approx 1859
Children: Michael, Margaret, Mary Ann (Marian), Daniel, John, Sarah Jane, another Daniel, another Margaret, Rosella.  Living in Kirley , Baptised in the Parish of Maghera
This family seems to disappear after 1897 - Where did they go?

Added: It maybe that this family went to Barrow in Furness about 1882

Thanks

Another query - does anyone know how well recorded parish B/M/D's were during the famine years?

Thanks

Derry (Londonderry) / 1831 Census
« on: Wednesday 11 March 15 16:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I wonder if someone could answer a query for me - I am revisiting some research.  I am looking back at the 1831 Census.  This only lists Head of household/number of families in each house hold/#males/#females/religion.

For one of the names I am looking at, it has dashed lines through the columns.  So no information recorded- as if he did not live there. I know the man was not dead (he died in 1869) and appears in the G.V. Same townland (valuation taken in 1859).

If it was the GV I would consider it was land only.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Hi all

This has just been brought to the attention of a number of Family History Societies and Archives -

What a loss if the money cannot be raised.

Oxfordshire / Oxfordshire Research - Parish records
« on: Sunday 01 June 14 20:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Every so often I like to dip into research on my family that hailed from Thame and Sydenham, Oxfordshire.  I feel rather frustrated as OFHS seem to have to monopoly on any parish record information.  Is there some other source that I may be missing?  The OFHS website is very confusing about look ups etc.  I can't really supply one particular name and date that I am interested in as I would to wade though many years of marriages, baptisms and deaths.  Help...

There isn't anything tucked away on archives.org or google books is there?   Thanks

Derry (Londonderry) / Stramore Townland, Ballynascreen
« on: Monday 28 April 14 19:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

This is me following up a rather fanciful notion. I have for years thought there may be some connection between the Donnelly family that I am researching and that of  Dec Donnelly.  This is based on nothing more than a conversation I had many years ago when in N.I doing some research.

Anyway, today this article has appeared in the Belfast Telegraph:
http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/local-national/northern-ireland/census-reveals-decs-irish-ancestry-30225191.html

It says Dec's family are from the townland of Stramore in Ballynascreen.  Anyway, I looked here
http://www.billmacafee.com/localitiesoutsidenantrim/ballynascreenparishmap.htm
but can't place it.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks
