United States of America / Naturalization Records?
« on: Friday 21 November 14 16:02 GMT (UK)  »
I've an on/off thread going on the Canada Board re Charles Stewart Brady.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=597572.0

C. S. Brady (senior) was living in Brooklyn when he signed up for  the Canadian Army in 1916.
He said he was an American citizen.
Is there any way of finding out more about this?

Incidentally, I have all the info about his ancestors, and his descendants, and his WWI service (apart from the date/place of his marriage to Mildred Equi - probably ~1916).

Leicestershire / Convents in Leicestershire - Mary Begg
« on: Friday 21 November 14 15:50 GMT (UK)  »

Does anyone know what order(s) of nuns might have been in these convents? Are they still in use?

1. Parson Wood Hill, Whitwick ... 1891, 1901

2 Convent Park Road, Loughboro ... 1911

Background ...
Mary Begg b. Skerries IRL ~1868

1871 - in Cardiff with her family

not with the family again in England/Wales (no censuses available for Ireland pre-1901)

I saw a mention of a nun attending a family funeral in the 1930s, and found a Mary Begg of the correct age in the convents above ... I'd like to find out a little more  ...

The Lighter Side / Grave Papers found - 12 years on
« on: Tuesday 23 September 14 23:28 BST (UK)  »
about 15 years ago, Aunt Em showed me the Grave Papers for her Grandparents' Grave in Glasnevin, Dublin.

Twelve years ago Em died, and we searched the house - high up and low down - for the papers. Zilch, nada, not a thing! I couldn't understand where they could have gone - Em was an organised person, with all her faculties.

Recently OH has been going through stuff which fetched up in our attic from various old family houses ... and what did he find? Yes, the long-lost grave papers! They're only of sentimental value, as the grave is full, but I'm delighted!

(I think I'll do a bit more looking in the attic - who knows what other treasures are lurking!)

Ireland / Portlaw(Guilcagh) C of I - photos needed please
« on: Monday 01 September 14 23:11 BST (UK)  »
Guilcagh is a few miles south of Portlaw, and is the Church of Ireland graveyard for the area.
I visited this graveyard (about 50 graves) last year, and found g-granda's grave.

While there, I photographed most of the headstones. I was under time pressure, so I missed some, and several photos were poor quality. And I'm not likely to get back to Portlaw this year.

I've transcribed those I could and I'm ready to send them to the IGP site (Ireland Genealogy Projects).

If anyone would like to help, and photo some of the missing/unclear stones, I'd be very grateful!
If you think you can help, please PM me, and I can send details of what needs doing. I hope this isn't too cheeky!

I've put this on Ireland General, because Portlaw is in Co. Waterford, but very near Co. Tipperary and Co. Kilkenny.

Ireland / Who had a Postal Vote in 1940s?
« on: Wednesday 27 August 14 21:05 BST (UK)  »
As it's Heritage week, I took myself off to Cathal Brugha barracks in Dublin to the military Archive.
I had a most entertaining time and started to chase up some family who were in the Irish Army (successfully in the case of one I KNEW was involved).

The other was a man who had a postal vote (as marked on the Electoral Registers). The archive couldn't turn up anyone of his name, though I wasn't clear as to his birthdate etc ... typical lack of forethought on my part!

Anyway, does anyone know of other reasons, apart from Army, that one might have a postal vote?
I have six people who qualified - two definitely soldiers.
I don't think disability was a criterion in the 1940s .. but I may be wrong about this.

Armed Forces / What's a Royal Engineer?
« on: Thursday 10 July 14 22:52 BST (UK)  »
I'm assuming that a Royal Engineer might be a sailor or a soldier?

I have John Begg in Limerick 1901 - Royal Engineer - unemployed.
He was born in 1875 and died in 1905.

I have his parents, siblings etc, but I'd like to know a little more about his job.

Glamorganshire / CARDIFF - Burial of Captain Michael Joseph BEGG
« on: Thursday 26 December 13 16:21 GMT (UK)  »
Where was Captain Michael Begg buried?

Captain Michael Begg was born/married in Ireland .. I have all that, and the births of his 9 childen, mostly in Cardiff. And most of their marriages and deaths.

He was a well-known ship-broker in Cardiff, died in Newport Borough asylum Sept 1907. His home address was St Andrew's Crescent, Cardiff. He was R. C.

There's a detailed obit from the "Weekly Mail -Cardiff", but it says nothing about the burial. Any ideas? - they were well-off, so there's probably a headstone somewhere.

Ireland / Gardaí - can/could they vote? ...**COMPLETED**
« on: Monday 15 July 13 21:21 BST (UK)  »
I have a relative, born 1906 Rathdown, father Irish, mother ?Scottish.

His marriage in 1930 and a birth in 1939 show him to be a civic guard.

i think I've found the family on the Electoral Registers 1950s and early 1960s, but he only has a Division III vote (I think this is for local elections).

Anyone got any remarks/suggestions?
