World War One / what does D.A.H. mean? (or is it DA.H) ...**COMPLETED**
« on: Wednesday 17 February 10 21:40 GMT (UK)  »
I went to Kew last week, and had a wonderful day finding stuff about my three WWI soldiers.
I'm new at Military things, as all the rest of the family were in Ireland. So I've several questions, but will take them one at a time.

Richard joined up with rank "boy" at the age of 14 in July 1917.
He was discharged being no longer physically fit for service Sept 1919.
record says
Disability D A H attributable

what would this mean?

US Lookup Requests / Cormac FAGAN -died 1991 ..California
« on: Sunday 23 August 09 15:52 BST (UK)  »
Cormac FAGAN was born July 1912. Died 9 May 1991 in San Bernardino ?California.

I found a reference to this death recently on another genealogy site. He may be a cousin who emigrated from Ireland and lost touch.

Maybe there's an obituary in a San Bernardino Newspaper, which might give me a few more details to tie in with our Cormac. Or maybe someone will have another suggestion? I guess he went to the States in 1940s, but not sure.

Ireland / Family History Site - some BMD indexes mistranscribed? **NO**
« on: Friday 31 July 09 16:00 BST (UK)  »
I think this is a great site .. but

Has anyone had problems with mistranscriptions on this site?

I can manage names transcribed incorrectly, but it's a problem when the indexes could be incorrect.

For BMDs, as far as I know, a particular Poor Law Union will always have the same Volume number e.g. 2 for Dublin S, (or 2, 7,12 and 17 up to 1878).

In searching for Patrick Murphy (it would be a name like that!) in Baltinglass about 1880, I get mostly vol=2, but a couple of vol=3!

I'd make a guess at Vol 2 when I go to order the cert, but the one I'm most interested in says Vol 3 page 863. - all the other Baltinglass page numbers are 270 - 430ish ...

any experts got any comments?

Ireland / Census N. Ireland 1926? 1931?
« on: Tuesday 07 July 09 12:49 BST (UK)  »
Due to the War of Independence, Ireland didn't have a 1921 Census.

The next Census of the Republic of Ireland (technically the Free State) was 1926.

When did the next Census of Northern Ireland take place?

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / 1911 GRAY Richard, Bromley **COMPLETED**
« on: Sunday 28 June 09 15:48 BST (UK)  »
sorry, I see I shouldn't have posted on the Kent lookup board

not sure if I should be on this board or Census Board!

Also I don't want to ask for anything illegal!

I was at the National Archive, Kew on Friday last - did all I had intended - had 15 minutes over so pottered round the War Office stuff -
and there was great-uncle Richard in Kent in WWI, last seen in Ireland in 1902. And I'd no time to look him up in the census. And I probably won't get back there till next year.

From the 1911 website, I know he and his son are the only Richard Grays in Bromley. I've found the names of all the Grays in the household, but I'm not sure of
... relationships to him, esp John and Susan - are they married, kids?
... where are some of them born

I hope this is an ok request - if not, sorry!

Ireland / BMDs (unwanted) and "postems"
« on: Tuesday 16 June 09 11:48 BST (UK)  »
I've been thinking about this for a few months - since I added "postems" for all "my" people on FreeBMD (England and Wales).

The FamilySearch site for Irish BMDs doesn't offer this facility. understandably. But, is there anyway we could set up a collection of lists of BMDs available? Maybe, something similar to the "unwanted certs" board?
It might include listings of names as well ... I haven't kept all my "wrong" photocopies, but I've noted the details.

I think to be useful, it would have to be vaguely alphabetical .. I wouldn't mind helping to keep it all tidy...

Any thoughts on this, anyone?

I don't have much family in England and Wales, and I've tracked down most of them 5-10 years ago. However the 1911 census in Wales has spurred me to do a bit more.

I used to go to the PRO in Islington - did I hear it had moved? Anything else someone out-of-date like me should know?

I'll be in London D.V  in a week or so, and I'd like to do a bit of rummaging in the family closets while I'm there!

Ireland / COMPLETED**Maryborough Jail (now Portlaoise)
« on: Monday 16 February 09 19:19 GMT (UK)  »
seeing exmanc's posting on "prison records" reminded me to follow up an incident in my family history. I'm posting here, rather than on the Laois board, to get a greater audience. (Mods please move if you think that's better)

My father used to talk of being in Maryborough Jail during the Civil War (so, 1922-23) - he said that there was a fire in the jail, started by the prisoners. Has anyone heard anything about this? Do you think it would have been in the papers, or hushed up? (or maybe it wasn't a very big fire!)
