Fife / origin of name
« on: Monday 18 October 10 19:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
The name is Kilgour, which is by the way my middle name.I have a large tree about my surname, but not a lot of info regarding the Kilgours.
My GGGrandmother was a Margaret Kilgour b.1781 in Kirkaldy. The reason for this is I could not trace any ancesters who have had the name Kilgour included in there name.I would like very much to find out as much of the Kilgours, and hopefully one of you could point me in right direction.
Thanks
Peter

Hi All
Could anyone tell me where the BMD's for the Winsford area are for the years about 1903 - 1904.
I have found a new addition to my tree,a grandson name of John King b.1904 in Winsford according to the 1911 census, and I would like to try and find out more about him.
Thanks

Morning Everybody
I have just found an interesting item on the 1911 census regarding my family tree, this being the appearance of a John King grandson born in Winsford Cheshire.
What I would like to know is what district/area would Winsford come under.
I have had a look in the BMD but no luck.

The Lighter Side / I Wonderrrrrrrrr
« on: Monday 04 August 08 17:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi everybody
When my grandfather climbed over Hadrians Wall and came south of the border,he was lodging in Bury,Lancs in 1861 and was gainfully employed as a grocers assistant.
He then came further south and stayed in Newcastle Staffs, where I might add,a certain young lady caught his eye,and they got married in 1867,he had a grocers shop in town for about 20years.
But I often wonder how far south he might have gone or changed his mind and climbed back over the wall.
Makes you think.

Fife / Kilgour and its connection to Falkland
« on: Wednesday 30 July 08 19:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi all
I have been putting all my paperwork in some sort of order and came across this story about the origin of the name Kilgour.
Whateverthe origin of the name we know that it came from the Gaelic language. The Gauls carried it with them on their conquest to Ireland, and then the Irish carried it Scotland about the year 500AD.
One of the first to bear the name was a baby that was left on the steps of St.Thomas Church in Falkland Palace. The Child was raised by the kirk of the church and assumed his name.
The child was left there just after a great battle in which the clan of Douglas was almost wiped out.Legend has it that the child was a Douglas and was left there to save its life because the Douglas clan was outlawed by the crown.
Kilgour means" wooded hill" from the Celtic word for hill we get "kill"and from the Gaelic prefix kil which denoted achurch.
Another version is ahill of the goats, kil meaning hill and gour meaning goats.
Thanks All
Peter
