Thankyou for replying.I do know about this family and believe they may be the next generation and I have spoken to their heirs in the 21st century in USA London etc.Renton  Laidlaw the broadcaster is also a direct descendant but none can put my James  into any documentation to prove one way or another so I was looking for any school records that may link them all up. I was given the family bible starting 1841 when James and Mary Scott was married  and I am still at 1841 !!  Being a borderer where the Turnbulls originated from I was hoping to link up down here so that everyone could join the Turnbull Clan Assoc.

Caithness / James TURNBULL

My2xGGrandfather James Turnbull is shown in the Gladsmuir 1841 census as being a groom born in WICK but there is no trace of birth anywhere. Death cert would make him born about 1810.
Is there any school records available in Wick area which could help me.?
I believe his father was Andrew?

Hawick MIs were produced by Hawick Archaeological Soc.about 1963and known as Transactions. Ian Landels is well known in Hawick and should put you right.Unfortunately a lot of the information recorded was only up to 1855 which means 150 yrs still needing recorded.
I transcribed the 3 Selkirk MIs but you can can get many other local border MIs on CDs and booklets through www.bordersfhs.org.uk web site. Recent publications include Bowden,Weirhill Melrose,Melrose Abbey Kelso Cavers etc.
The records office now in Hawick called the HUB will have copies for you to see if necessary.
Hope this helps
