The Common Room / Re: Genealogy Information
« on: Thursday 16 November 06 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
I would be cautious too.

Like gah I too have shared information,photo's and certificates............and I too didn't get a thank you.  :'(

It could work to your advantage though, if you ask the person contacting you to "show their hand" and let you see what information they have already on the family.  ;D

I have contacted people too for a third party..........but only for members of my family or close friends.

One site I watch regularly has obvious "professional researchers" being paid to research but making out they are researching their own tree.

By nature, as people researching our family trees, we love to share, sadly there are people who will take advantage of that.............how many times have you got excited when a distant rellie contacts you?...........these people know that.

I'm a great believer in "gut instinct"......it never fails!! ;)

The Common Room / Re: William Davis - Help, We Can't Find Him
« on: Thursday 16 November 06 00:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi KathMc,

I don't think I can help you very much but I saw that you, like me,had no replies to your posting...........so sympathies!!

I am a Roman Catholic convert(I converted in the early 70's  and I have looked at the certificate that was issued to me by the Catholic Church.

My name is in Latin............have you looked for a Latin version of his name?

Also I was told to keep my certificate safe and it would not be until I was confirmed (as opposed to taking my 1st Holy Communion) that I could call myself a Roman Catholic............my certificate would have to be verified if I wanted to be buried in "Catholic" ground or a Catholic Cemetery.

Maybe William just took the 1st stages of converting, so couldn't be buried in a "Catholic" grave.............he may, like me at the time, have converted as he was marrying a Roman Catholic and to make it easier bringing any children up in the Catholic faith...but took things no further.
Have you asked the church to look for the certificate that was issued at the time............to see if it was used on death?

Good luck.........I have 2 brick walls and know how frustrating they are.......forward 1 step then back 3!!

The Common Room / Desperate for help to find birth:- Gourlay,Fife
« on: Monday 13 November 06 14:45 GMT (UK)  »
I am getting quite desperate to solve this conundrum!    ???

My Great X 3 grandmother Agnes Gourlay died giving birth to her illegitimate child Agnes Kirk (who was brought up by her paternal grandmother) on November 9th 1838 age 23years in Ceres,Fife.

I am unable to locate a birth for Agnes Gourlay..........which by my reckoning should be 1815.

I KNOW
 a) that she is NOT the Agnes Gourlay daughter of David Gourlay and Barbara Porter...........she went to America and married.

b) She is NOT the daughter of John Gourlay and Elisabeth Sinclair........they sailed to Ellis Island from Dundee.

c)John Gourlay and Margaret Mills had a daughter called Agnes but she was born in 1800.

d) John Gourlay and Lillias Black had a daughter called Agnes too, but she died on 30th October 1835 age 22 years in Logie,Fife.

I have Agnes' death from the parish records.............but it doesn't tell me who her parents were.

Any help no matter how small will be  truly appreciated or any advice to point me in the right direction

thanks

Sue

Blimey!!   :o How far have you gone back in your tree??

My parents aren't but my paternal great grandparents are (at the beginning of the 18th century).......I don't think that they could / would have known this.

They say it's a small world!!

Thanks Christine, but I don't hold out much hope. Have been thru the whole of the 1880's for this particular person....parish records and GRO.............nothing.
At one time last year I thought of putting it out as a challenge to Rootschat!!

This year I have been ill and have had to have a 6 month break from Rootschat  :o and family history ..........but I am now up and running again so hopefully there will be just a small piece of info that will give me the break I'm looking for!!!   ;D

keep smiling too

My grandmothers birth appears not to have been registered in 1883..........nor her parents marriage..........and my grandmother was an only child!! ::)

Only her fathers name is on her marriage certificate .............one day I will find her birth............but it won't be soon!!!

My guess is no too.............but from the nose and ears I think they are probably related. I agree that the jawline is different.

Oh I wish!!!!
It would break down the brick wall that has been in my way for 10 years, preventing me from researching one branch of my tree  :(
