Monaghan / Re: Banbridge Tutorial Peter Michael Finnighan Clones

Did a quick search on Scotland's People.  There are seven people named Finnigan (sic) in Rhu, Dunbartonshire in 1911.

Included are two Peters, one aged 30 and the other (Peter M) aged 4.  There's also a 26 year-old Maria.

Looks good, but you'd need to purchase the record to be sure.

As regards Ireland in 1901, there's a 16 year-old Mary (sic) A Moore at house 15 in Annaghkilly, Clones Rural in Monaghan.  There are a few Peters in Monaghan of the right sort of age, with surnames that are close enough, though none in Clones.

Finnighan is an usual spelling - there are only four occurrences in the whole of the 1901 census of Ireland and only 12 in Scotland in 1911.

The family was in Scotland by 1911 (presumably Dunbartonshire).  Have you looked at the census entry for 1911?

Do you know when the couple were born?

Can you say the date of the mariage?  If you've got the marriage certificate, can you say the names of the couple's fathers?   What religious denomination were they?

When do you think they came to Scotland?  Would be useful to know where they were in 1901.

Do you have the 1982 Scottish death record?  It should have Peter's parent's names on it (if known to the informant, of course) as a double check.  Likewise, do you know the date of death for Peter senior and Maria Agnes (presumably in Scotland) & do you have those certificates (for the same reason)?

What's the significance of "Banbridge Tutorial"?

My daughter was in Dublin at the end of the year & I got her to go to the GRO office to hand in some copying requests for me (paying by cash).  I've used this service a few times now and have been very happy with it.

This time they offered to email the results as image files rather than sending photocopied sheets by post.

Now, if they can do that, surely it's a small step to placing the request & order process on-line, with card payment.   They really are missing out on a money-spinner.

English death certificates do not give any details about parentage -- and at that time would not even give place of birth - but would give an age (only as accurate as what the informant knew about the deceased)

Ah, didn't know that.  The same as for Irish ones then.

Here in Scotland happily the position is different, albeit that the information is only as good as the informant (which is never - of course - the subject him/herself).

Hi,

As you've noted yourself elsewhere, the 1871 Census entry appears to have Hoary (rather the indexed Heary).  That's close to Horey in terms of the spoken version.  My guess is that Hoary is more likely to be closer to the Irish original and Horey is the modified version as recorded by an English official.

There is an civil registration record for a marriage of an Anne Coyle in 1868 in Athy Registration District (which covers parts of Counties Kildare and Laois).  On the same page is the record for a James Hoaren.

Using church record searches, a process of elimination reveals that Anne Coyle did not marry anyone else on that register page.  She did marry a James, but the surname is not transcribed as Hoaren, Hoary, Hoarey, Horey etc (which is a bit of a puzzle).  The marriage concerned was in Athy RC parish, Kildare.

Good old LDS Family Search has a collection "Marriages 1619-1898", which doesn't appear anywhere else that I know of.  It has a record for a marriage of a James Hoaren (again) to an Anne Coyle on 30th June 1868 in Athy, Kildare.  His father was John and hers Patrick.

That 1868 marriage looks very promising - I'd be sending away for that. The English 1872 death record for James (if you don't have it already) may give the names of his parents.

There's a James Hory who was the witness to a wedding in Cork in 1861.  Yes, that's jumping about the island a bit, but the reason I mention it is because there's an 1824 birth in Cork of a James Hoarey (sic) whose father was John.  1824 is a bit earlier than the age on the 1872 death record would suggest, but not implausibly so.

Hi,

What you don't say is if you've tried the on-line sources for records (mainly church ones) for County Down.

If you have then there's probably not much more to say than in Aghadowey's post.  If you haven't, then if you post more details (the parents' names & denomination, for example) then I'm sure the folk here will try to help.

What were the names of the couple?

At the time when I was able to see all the pages, I in fact spent quite a bit more money on the site, as I saw more possibilities and was more inclined to take a gamble and buy the record.  But I won't pay to just see the pages, so they have lost me as a customer.

That's my view as well.  It's a short-sighted move.   The smart thing is to entice you with the lure of records that definitely look interesting.   Like you, I spent quite a lot on that basis, but much less so now.
