Down / Re: McAnulty
« on: Saturday 13 September 08 13:55 BST (UK)  »
HI,

I have a McAnulty great-grandmother born in 1862 in Down, so I've been collecting info on that name in the county.

I don't have anything that is an exact match to the details you give.   If you haven't found anything either then perhaps the records for him are missing (or simply not available on-line yet).

The partial matches I have are listed below, as well as info that may be relevant to the father, John.  Hope it's of some help.

Down / 1911 Census Online - Timetable
« on: Thursday 11 September 08 16:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I expect that most people here are aware of the project by the Dublin authorites to digitise the 1911 and 1901 census returns & make them available on-line free of charge, and of the recent announcement that Kerry, Antrim and Down for 1911 will be ready in October 2008.

But, does anyone here know anything more precise than "October"?    Beginning, middle or end?

TIA

Antrim / Belfast Docks - 1914 Death
« on: Thursday 14 August 08 12:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've recently learned that one of my connections, John McGinley, left Ireland in a hurry because he was on the run . . .

Apparently he was involved in the death of a policeman (possibly a security guard) at a Dry Dock in Belfast.  He hit the man, who fell overboard onto the hard dock surface & died.  This was probably in early May 1914.

John escaped to the US via Canada.  I don't think he ever returned.

John's defence was that he was protecting his girl's honour. The story is that a later investigation cleared him of any deliberate wrongdoing, but that he decided not to risk coming back just in case.

Anyway, can anyone here suggest how I might find out about this?  I can't find newspaper records on-line which cover this period.

TIA

Armagh / Re: Request for help : Directory for Armagh - 1915-20
« on: Wednesday 25 June 08 17:55 BST (UK)  »
Christopher,

I don't know why she married in Belfast when she was living in Armagh (which she definitely was) and came originally from Emyvale, Co Monaghan.

Her husband, Patrick O'Brien, was also from Emyvale, but by this time was living in Glasgow. He had no connection with this business as far as I know.

Patrick's parents were long dead by 1920.  Margaret's mother was dead too & her father had remarried.  That may be the reason there was no pull to go back to Monaghan.

But it doesn't explain Belfast.  Perhaps there was some other attraction - other family there, for example.

Since yesterday I have learned that in Armagh she stayed for a while with a family I was told was called McNeese (spelling uncertain, so could be McNeice etc).   I notice in the 1910 link that aghadowey kindly posted that there's this:

"M'Neice, Patrick, English street Lower".

Could be, I suppose.   It doesn't list a business as such, however.  Is there any other source that might help here?

Thanks for the assistance.

Armagh / Request for help : Directory for Armagh - 1915-20

Hi,

Does anyone here have access to an edition of the directory from about 1915 to 1920 covering Armagh city?

If so, can I make a request?    I'm looking for a Margaret  McCormack.  In 1920, her Belfast marriage record describes her as "Business Manager" with address as Armagh.    I don't know what the business might have been.

I'd be very grateful to know if she appears in a directory entry for the period.

Can anyone help?   TIA.
