Ireland / Re: Family naming pattern?
« on: Monday 07 May 12 12:00 BST (UK)  »
I've found the naming pattern to be of great benefit in my own research.   Yes, it's not always followed exactly - and I've noticed it to be less well adhered to for girls - but you should make it the initial, default assumption & that will help you in figuring out where to look to begin with.

So, if you know the names of the grandparents, you can search for children named after them.  That said, it’s actually apparent deviations from the pattern that I’ve found to be the most fruitful avenue for investigation.  The usual reasons are overlaps in names and premature deaths.  What I mean by that is best illustrated by some examples, which have turned up a few times for me.

The pattern was: 1st son after husband's father, 2nd son after mother's father, 3rd son after father, possibly 4th son after father's oldest brother and so on.  So, what does it mean if you notice that the children were not named in this order?  Here are two possibilities:

- You don't know the names of the two grandfathers, but you notice that 2nd son has the same name as his father.   That could mean either that the mother's father had the same name as the husband or as the husband's father.

- You look at a census record.  Oldest son has the same name as the mother's father, next son has the father's name and it's the 3rd son who has the husband's father's name.  What that might suggest is that there was an earlier child, named in the standard way, who died previously.  The name (that of the husband’s father) was re-used for a subsequent son.  You can now go looking for the death of a child – you have the name and some idea of when he died.

My own experience in County Down is that there was pretty strong adherence throughout the 19th Century, but it tailed off sharply once into the 20th.

And, as will be on the marriage record, his father's name was also James & hers was William.

Ros Davies' site has references to William Scott and James Stewart of Gransha who may be these fathers or, at least, relatives.  There's also another William Scott and a Mary J Scott in 1914 who may be relatives.

There are several Gransha Scotts with wills available via the PRONI website.

There's a death of a Michael Connolly in Tullamore in Quarter 1 1955, aged 77.

Index reference is Volume 3, Page 409.

If he was born in Dec 1878, he would have been only 76 in early 1955, but it's a decent match nonetheless.

Lundavra Road must be it then.  Will take a look next time I'm in the area.

Thanks for your help.

BTW, I previously took a copy of parts of the school record book, which covered 1914 to 1946.  It is entitled "Fort William High School".

Monaghan / Re: Rev Patrick McKenna - b. Monaghan, d. Fermanagh
« on: Thursday 10 November 11 00:48 GMT (UK)  »
From www.proni.gov.uk Will Extracts- Will available to view- mentions brother James McKenna, nephew Michael Mccann, brother Bernard McKenna, sister Catherine McKenna:
"Probate of the Will of The Reverend Patrick McKenna late of Brookeborough County Fermanagh P.P. who died 10 September 1913 granted at Armagh to The Reverend Patrick McMeel and The Reverend Lugene Coyle R.C.C."

Sorry, Aghadowey, I should have mentioned that.  Thanks for looking.

I'd still be grateful if anyone could tell me anything else about him - his date of birth or even his father's name.  Although the will mentions siblings, the names crop up in so many McKenna families that it doesn't really narrow it down much.  I do know that he was born in north Monaghan & that his mother died in Cavanmoutray.

Monaghan / Rev Patrick McKenna - b. Monaghan, d. Fermanagh
« on: Wednesday 09 November 11 23:40 GMT (UK)  »
Patrick McKenna was a Catholic priest who died on 10th Sept 1913 in Brookeborough, County Fermanagh, Ireland. He may well be buried in the graveyard in the grounds of St Mary's church there.

He had been born in County Monaghan to a mother named Catherine. Going by the available census and death records (which - frustratingly - differ), his year of birth was something around 1861 to 1873. I wouldn't be surprised, however, if the real date was earlier still.

This is a different person to the Patrick McKenna who was Bishop of Clogher diocese from 1909 to 1942.

Does anyone here have any further information about him?  There are so many McKennas (with the same selection of names) that it's proving difficult to narrow things down.
