Armed Forces / William Wagstaff 51st Regiment part 3
« on: Thursday 02 May 19 06:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi all
I have again come across some more information on Private William Wagstaff.

I am still trying to find out whether his children, 2 girls Mary Ann circa 1837/8 and Sara 1839 were born in Ireland or England. These 2 children were on board when they landed in Tasmania.

Whether William and his wife were married in England or Ireland and if they went to New South Wales or Tasmania.  I have been unable to find any records

The 51st Regiment had to stop at Tasmania to pick up water and some of the regiment stayed, the rest of the regiment went onto New South Wales with convicts on the "Port Sea".

I next trace William and family on the "Runnymede" heading to Western Australia, where they eventually settled.
Any help will be greatly appreciated

The Common Room / outward bound convict from Bermuda

Hi all
I have been researching a James Mitchell from Scotland, who ended up in Australia 1863 as a convict.
Before he was transported to Western Australia, he had been previously convicted of theft and breaking and entering, he was convicted and transported to Bermuda on the Castle Eden, in 1854-5 and was received on the Medway hulk.  I then found him again convicted after this in 1861 where he was ultimately transported to Western Australia in 1863.

What I am trying to find is a ships list that he may have been on when he returned to England/Scotland after doing his time in Bermuda as they had to find and pay their own way.
TIA
Kim

Thank you for contacting me.

I have done some extensive research on the 51st regiment.  William Wagstaff was my 4th great grandfather and traveled from England to New South Wales via Tasmania in 1837/8.  Part of the regiment stayed in Tasmania and the other part traveled onto Sydney.  William was one who stayed in Tasmania, later travelling to Western Australia in 1840.
My suggestion to you, is read everything that comes up on the TROVE newspaper search for the ships PORTSEA and Runnymede, you may find more information that way.  If he didnt stay in Tasmania, he would have settled in New South Wales, later travelling to WA to pick up 51st regiment soldiers and then on to India,  William left the regiment before they headed to India.
I hope this helps
Kim
