Devon / George TICKLE
« on: Friday 12 June 09 15:45 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any information on George Tickle, a possible relative. He was listed as living in Plymouth in the 1851 census along with his wife Jane. He was described as having been born in Birmingham around 1795 (aged 56). I have a George Tickle in my family baptised in 1799 and I have found no George Tickles born or baptised in Birmingham around 1795, making me think that the two George Tickles are one and the same man.

Earlier, George was listed in the 1841 census, age 40, with his wife Jane (40), and daughter Jane (15). If the above age was correct he'd have been 46 then, which I would have thought would have been rounded down to 45, not to 40.

I have found George Tickle and his wife in the bdm index: he died in June 1857 in Plymouth, she two years earlier in the same place.

I am hoping to find out more about George Tickle and his family and maybe even to be able to contact a descendent of this family, to confirm that he is my George Tickle.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Looking for Martha Randall
« on: Sunday 07 June 09 16:36 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the parentage of Martha Randall, my 2 x great grandmother.

She married William Tickle, 16 March 1811, Westminster Street, Hanover Square, London and, unfortunately, died in 1834 (in Birmingham) before the 1841 census.
I haven't (yet) gotten a transcript of the marriage but I don't expect there to many clues when I do.

A cousin (and contact of another cousin of mine) thinks she was born in London but I don't know how she came to that conclusion.

A forum member kindly checked the LDS indexes for me and the most likely baptism there is:

Martha Randal
11 MAR 1791, Saint Mary, Harmondsworth, London, England
Parents: William Randal and Ann.

The couple had three other children in the indexes, baptised in the same place.

William: 17 August 1788
Elizabeth: 18 June 1793
Sharl. (presumably Charlotte): 04 MAR 1795

I've found seven marriages for a William Randall, in London, in the time frame I think most likely (aged between 20 and 30 years) and three for Elizabeth. Unfortunately, there are no likely marriages that I can find for Charlotte. The only likey marriage for a Martha Randall (in London) in the appropriate time frame is the one to my ancestor.

I was hoping that I could check the censuses and trace these people, and then, maybe, find a will that would prove that my Martha belongs to this family, but I'm overwhelmed by the number of possibilities, have discovered that freecen doesn't seem to cover the area, and can't afford a subscription to view the 1841 censuses as yet. I'm, honestly, feeling overwhelmed: most of my English research has been using the LDS indexes and I've only just started branching out.

Worcestershire / Brook family of Worcestershire
« on: Sunday 07 June 09 16:30 BST (UK)  »
I have two women by the name of Mary Brook (I'm guessing they were members of the same family) who married two of my Tickle ancestors.

Thomas Tickle married Mary Brook on 3 August 1727 at St Peters, Droitwich.

Their son, George, married Mary Brook on 20 August 1764 at Hampton Lovett and the bride was described as being of that parish.

I have a baptism for the earlier Mary Brook but, as I have only the word of a distant cousin (and the LDS index entry), I am not 100% certain of that. She, if it is her, was baptised on 20 March 1716, St Peters, Droitwich the daughter of John Brook.

I am hoping that there are other people out there studying either this family or others with the same surname so I can start narrowing it down.

Worcestershire / Molly Williams
« on: Sunday 07 June 09 16:29 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the parentage of Molly Williams, one of my direct ancestors and who married George Tickle on 9 November 1766 at St Peters, Droitwich. Both she and George were residents of the parish of St Nicolas, Droitwich.

I have checked the LDS indexes and, whereas there are no baptisms for the time frame of a Molly Williams in Worcester, there are far too many of either a Mary Williams or a Margaret Williams (I've read that Molly can be short for Margaret). The only clue I have to her family is the John Williams who is listed in their marriage transcript as a witness.

I welcome any information that anyone can give me, even if it is "negative", ie, the fact that someone has traced a Williams family extensively in that area at that time and that none of them fit.

I have an ancestor - Martha Randell - who was born around 1791 in, in London, though I got the information second hand). I can only find one baptism in the IGI that fits that time period, but I know that the indexes don't always cover all parishes and, when they do, they don't always cover all the years the registers were in existence for that parish. Is there a link to a website which tells me which London parishes of the time the IGI doesn't have indexes of? I'm completely unfamiliar with London parishes today, let along more than two hundred years ago, so I don't know where to start.

Thanks in advance.

Family History Beginners Board / Using Local Libraries From Afar
« on: Wednesday 09 July 08 04:18 BST (UK)  »
Up until now I've avoided records offices and the libraries local to the area where my ancestors lived, because I have limited funds and I was always under the impression you couldn't get anything in the records there unless you paid for it. But, on this site, I've heard of people emailing local libraries and getting answers back on specific enquiries. For example, someone on this site emailed the Worcestershire Library and History Centre about a marriage in my family and they replied they had looked up the record and the two were married by licence.

Is that a common thing? And how much information can you get that way? Would I have much luck, say, in emailing a library that has the correct records and say, please look up the baptism (date and place known) of my ancestor and tell me what information it gives about his parents?

Warwickshire / Martha Randell - Which One Is Mine?
« on: Monday 07 July 08 11:11 BST (UK)  »
I'm having difficulty finding the parentage of this ancestor of mine. She married William Tickle in 1811 in London and afterwards they baptised all their children in William's native city of Birmingham. Someone looked up the marriage and there were no details on her father's name or origin, so that's a dead end. Her last child was born in 1827 and she died before the 1841 census. I haven't been able to find her death in the bdm indexes, so I assume she died somewhere in the decade between 1827 and 1837.

I've done a search at the familysearch.org site and found a lot of possible baptisms but none from the Birmingham area, though there is one in Warwick. And the baptism might be from an area that the indexes don't cover.

Does anyone have any idea of how I can search out the further ancestry of Martha? Or is it going to be a case of hard slog, with me trying to eliminate baptism candidates case by case? (by trying to find marriages, finding them in the censuses, etc, etc).

Warwickshire / Martha Tickell Birmingham Burial
« on: Monday 07 July 08 09:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I was wondering if someone could help me find the burial of Martha Tickell. Her last child was born on 2 January 1827 and she doesn't appear in the 1841 census for Birmingham, though her husband William does, so I'm assuming (maybe incorrectly) that she'd died in that time period.

Thanks in advance.

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / Droitwich Baptisms
« on: Monday 07 July 08 09:29 BST (UK)  »
I'd like to request a look up of one (or two) baptismal records.

The first is that of Thomas Tickell who was baptised on 9 June 1707, St Peter, Droitwich, the son of George and Elizabeth. I'm hoping the record will tell me something about his father.

The second is tougher. I took notes from the IGI when I had access to the microfiches. Years later I discovered that the first page of my notes in the folder had somehow been ripped out and lost. When I went back to get the information again on familysearch I found that I couldn't find one of the baptisms, the one of the first child of George and Elizabeth. Not only that but I can't remember the name of that child.  :-[

George and Elizabeth were married in 1689 and their second child was baptised in 1694 in Droitwich, so the first baptism occurred in that five year period. All of their children were baptised in either St Andrews, Droitwich or St Peters, Droitwich, and I do remember that first child being baptised in that city. Sorry to be so vague, but now that I'm starting to trace my family tree again this missing child is gnawing at me, especially since if I hadn't been so careless he or she wouldn't be lost!  :-[

Thanks in advance
