Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: Middlesex Census Whitechapel
« on: Wednesday 17 November 04 22:57 GMT (UK)  »
I've found the following - it may be a bit of a red herring, but there do seem to be some similarities:

From the 1871 Census:

19 Ashcroft Road Court Tower Hamlets

George D Leale (Head) - Age 58 (Schoolmaster)
Rose Leale (Wife) - Age 45
George D Leale (Son) Age 11
Amelia E Joseph (Wife's Daughter) Age 22
Alice A Joseph (Wife's Daughter) Age 14
Ellen Green (Wife's Daughter) Age 20
Ellen E Green (Granddaughter) Age 8 months

What do you think ?

Hi all,

I'm looking for some assistance from a Sherlock Holmes type - as my own powers of deduction appear to be getting me nowhere fast !

I'm attempting to locate the surname and marriage details of 'Sarah'.

Here is what I know so far:

1871 Census
Frederick Butler - 40 - Born Dover Kent (Husband)
Sarah A Butler - 38 - Born Ramsgate Kent (Wife)

1881 Census
Frederick Butler - 44 - Born Dover Kent (Husband)
Sarah Butler - 44 - Born Ramsgate Kent (Wife)

1891 Census
Frederick Butler - 53 - Born Ramsgate Kent (Husband)
Sarah Butler - 55 - Born Ramsgate Kent (Wife)
(Names for this census transcribed as 'Battis')

1901 Census
Frederick Butler - 63 - Born Dover Kent (Husband)
Sarah A Butler - 66 - Born Ramsgate Kent (Wife)

Sarah is never listed with any occupation, but Frederick is listed as either 'Landlord' or 'Smack Owner' depending on which census you look at.

I appreciate that there are some minor discrepancies for each of the above, but the address remains the same on each occasion, so I am sure they are all the same pairing.

I've scoured all I have access to, but cannot seem to locate a marriage detail for the above.

A possible avenue occurs in the 1871 Census - with a 'Minnie Ireland' - age 7 staying with the family, who is listed as 'Niece'

I have located her family detail on the 1871 Census, with her parents being:

George Irelend - Age 38 - Born Marylebone, Middlesex
Louisa Ireland - Age 38 - Born Ramsgate Kent.

I am assuming that Louisa is Sarah's sister.  But can I locate their marriage detail either ?! - Can I heck !!

So - Is anyone else out there feeling a bit 'Miss Marple' enough to be able to help me out ? - I would be most grateful for any tit-bits of info.

Many Thanks,
Richard

I'm not sure if you received the last PM I sent - so I'm having another go here for you.

You may be right about the two sets.

Here is some more info I've come across from the 1871 Census:

Living at Mill Lane - Cranbrook

William Tamsett - Age 60 - Ag Lab
Mary Tamsett - Age 62
George Tamsett - Age 28 Unmarried - Ag Lab
Mary Ann Tamsett - Age 24 Unmarried - Ag Lab
William Henry Tamsett - Age 5 Grandson.
(All of the above born 'Cranbrook')

Also at Mill Lane (but at a different location)

Charles Tamsett - Age 31 - Stoker Steam Engine (Born Cranbrook)
Elizabeth Tamsett - Age 21 (Wife - born Brenchley)
William Henry Tamsett - Age 8 months. (Born Cranbrook)

Just to throw another spanner into the works, I've found a William Tompsett, aged 5, born in Cranbrook - who was visiting Edward Mercer (Age 49) and Charlotte Mercer (Age 40) in Tonbridge.

Family History Beginners Board / Time for a plan?
« on: Sunday 31 October 04 16:35 GMT (UK)  »
Last night my copy of Family Tree Maker reliably informed me that I have now reached the milestone of listing 100 names in my family tree.  A bit of a feat for me, as I only started my research 3 weeks ago - and I know that I am very much a baby in comparison of some of your years of study and thousands of entries.

So I'm taking a long look at what I have achieved so far - and I must admit, I think I've gone a bit mad by trying to do too much all at once.  I've probably done something which I would imagine is rather common - by running off all over the place, finding information relating to siblings of ancestors, and who they married and their descendants and parentage (even though, strictly speaking they are not really my ancestors).  So, should I re-focus my concentrations ?

I thnk that at the moment I have completely exhausted all of the information I can possibly glean from all of the available census records.  I have pre-dated the 1837 information, have tried all possible perumtations within the IGI and FreeBMD to locate information relating to my personal 'Brick Walls'.

I have experienced the thrill of opening an envelope from the GRO enclosing a copy of a birth certificate from 1860, which has enabled me to gain huge amounts of further information from a number of truly wonderful and generous individuals.

But.... apart from the information detailed on the census returns, all I really know about my ancestors are their names and some sketchy dates of birth / marriage / death.  Is this where the real fun starts ? - Do I now need to fill up my car with a large amount of petrol and start taking my family on day-trips to remote parts of various counties and let them have a wander about while I rummage in some dusty files ?

Richard (who is relaxing for a change with a large mug of Chai tea)
