Kent Completed Lookup Requests / 1891 Census - Butler Family - Ramsgate Kent
« on: Sunday 24 October 04 19:57 BST (UK)  »
Hello, could somebody please help me so shed some light on what appear to be a family who may have 'gone out' ont he night of the census.

I have found the following from the 1871 Census:
Frederick Butler - 40
Sarah Butler - 38
Esther Butler - 8
Louisa Butler - 6
Frederick Butler - 4
Richard Butler - 2

They were all living in 'The Camden Arms' pub, which was at:
13 La Belle Alliance Sq, Ramsgate

in 1881 - at the same address lived:

Frederick Butler - 44
Sarah Butler - 44
Esther Butler - 18
Laura Butler - 16
Richard Butler - 12
Cordelia Butler - 9
Jeanetta Butler - 8
Albert Butler - 3

I can see that some of the information has altered somewhat (who hasn't lied about their age from time to time eh? - especially if you are in a pub at the time)  ;) but I have taken this to be the same family.

However, they seem to vanish in 1891 - I can find no trace of them until, again at the same address in the 1901 Cenus, I have:

Frederick Butler - 63
Sarah Butler - 66
Stanley Butler - 19

I would be very interested in the 1891 information, as I would love to know what happened to all the kids ? - I am finding no BMD details for the majority of them, so I'm hoping for a lead or two.

If anyone can help, I would be grateful

Thanks
Richard

Family History Beginners Board / Recent Information
« on: Sunday 24 October 04 00:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello (again) to all of you very helpful members of the board.

I have another question.

What is the most recent search dates I will be able to find out here in cyberspace.  I know that the civil registration index is subtitled 1837-1983, but getting any results post 1910 are very few and far between, particularly birth and marriage information.

Is this possible at all - or is the information too recent to be made available publicly ?

Thanks

Richard

Oh dear, in that case, I may have made a faux pas or two with my tracing.

For example - I know that my Grandfather's parents were called Richard and Ellen, and in order to locate Ellen's maiden name, I found Richard's marriage detail, then looked to see who was on the same page of the register.

There was indeed an Ellen listed - so I took this to be who I was searching for.  But now this may not be the case?

Blimey, this is all getting confusing !!!  :-\

Hopefully I'm not being dim (but if I am, feel free to point it out and laugh at me stupidity !)

I've been checking out some marriage information on Ancestry.co.uk, but I'm finding that when I click to see who else appears on the page, there are inctances where an odd number of names are returned.

Is anyone aware why this happens ? - And how I can track down the missing Bride / Groom ?

Sussex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: 1861 - Tettersell

Hello,

The date of birth information I managed to get from the FreeBMD site, along with his death date and Marriage date.

I think to solve this little mystery, I should invest in a certificate - It would be useful for me to test out the system  ;)

Chris,

Many thanks indeed for seeking out this information for me - I'm very grateful.

I am a little unsure if this is my James however, as the age is a couple of years out.

From the FamilySearch site, I have discovered that he was born on 5 August 1860, and on the 1901 census, his age is listed as 41.

So he should be 11 (or 10) in the 1861 census.  Unless of course I am expecting far too much accuracy from information which is almost 150 years old ?  What do you think - is this kind of thing common ?

Thanks

Richard

Sussex Completed Lookup Requests / 1861 - Tettersell

Hi,

Am wondering if anyone would be able to shed any more light on the early movements of my great grandfather - James William Tettersell.

The information I have uncovered is pretty sketchy

Born in 1860 in Brighton (Steyning?)
Married in 1888, again in Steyning
appears on the 1901 census in Strood (Kent) - however his name is mis-spelt as Tettersol - which is probably why he is tricky to track down.
Died 1914

I would be interested to learn of any 1861 census information - as this would give me the next family lead.

I have searched (in vain) all the usual haunts but am getting nowhere fast.  I am yet to get a copy of his marriage certificate (which is next on the list if all else fails !)

Thanks

Richard

Kent / Butler Family - Ramsgate
« on: Monday 18 October 04 23:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone would be able to help a newbie to track down some further information relating to a Frederick Butler.

What I know so far from searching various sources is:

Born 1827 in Ramsgate (or Dover - depending on which Census you look at).
Married to 'Sarah'
Was a publican in Dover in the latter part of the century - Living at both 'The Camden Arms' - 1871 and (I assume its the same chap) 'The Albion Hotel Tap' in 1867.

What I would ideally like to know is his marriage and death details.

Could anyone offer any suggestion on where I could look, any tips I could apply ?

I have tried searches using the usual sources (Free BMD, Ancestry.co.uk & The LDS Ancestry resources)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Richard

Family History Beginners Board / Publishing Extended Family Details
« on: Sunday 17 October 04 13:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've got the bug - and am spending many a long hour, getting excited at every new discovery that I make about the various branches of both my own and my wife's family history.

I've registered with numerous websites (and am now dreading the visa bill !) and think for the time-being that I have exhausted all available census records.

I've greated a 'GEDCOM' file of my tree and have uploaded this to a variety of places - However, I have notices that it only seems to generate a tree based on immediate descendants and not their siblings (which I would imagine would be a useful resource in itself).

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can make it known that I have details of these brothers & sisters (of whom someone else may be researching) - which may generate leads of their own ?

Thanks

Rich
