Lancashire Lookup Requests / Matthias/Mathias Gray Manchester to USA?
« on: Saturday 28 February 09 07:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everybody

Welcome to a beautiful Norfolk Morning!! ;D ;D ;D

Matthias Gray.   (Alternative spelling: Mathias)

I'm told that he was born in Manchester/Greater Manchester, Lancashire, England.
Supposedly the date of birth was between 1828 to 1835
I am unable to find anything on the IGI or 1841 Census :(

I'm told that he came over on the American Eagle, and arrived in New York City from London ???.
[The U.S. ship AMERICAN EAGLE was built at New York by Jacob A. Westervelt & William Mackey and launched in 1846. 899/1059 tons (old/new measurement); 158 ft 5 in x 30 ft 3 in x 21 ft 6 in (length x beam x depth of hold); 3 decks; draft 20 ft 6 in. She served in Griswold's Black X Line of sailing packets between New York and London from 1846 to 1867]
As for the voyage, I believe it was early July of 1847 (apparently he was 18...?).
I'm unable to find a Passenger Manifest for 1847  :( [There are a couple for the 1850s]

Eventually he married a Susan Lange.
Her maiden name was Sheppard
She came from New York.
Her father, so far as I know, was George Sheppard, and mother was Anna King.

That's all I've been told about him.
What I'm trying to find is anything that could pinpoint where he came from in the Lancashire/Manchester area.

Chewboy ;)

Hi there Mudge

Thank you for your interest :)

The original I am working from is at

http://www.flat222.org/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=8687&g2_imageViewsIndex=1

It looks pretty much in focus on there.... but seems to break up when saved.

Any ideas???

Best wishes

Mark

Hi Everyone

Please could you have a go at improving the photo of my wife's father?

It has faded in the middle as it obviously has been in a smaller frame

Thank You

Merry Christmas to you all

Berkshire Completed Look ups / Re: Thomas Giles of East Hanney
« on: Monday 15 December 08 21:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Liz

I found the following on the IGI

Family Group Record
Search Results

Husband
 Thomas Giles

Christening:  25 JUN 1816  St Helen, Abingdon, Berkshire, England
Marriage:  25 JUN 1826  St Helen, Abingdon, Berkshire, England

Wife     Elizabeth Ann Fisher

Birth:  About 1815  St Helen, Abingdon, Berkshire, England
Christening:
Marriage:  25 JUN 1826  St Helen, Abingdon, Berkshire, England

NO SOURCE

I don't know if you have it but it does give a christening the year you say your Thomas was supposed to have married an Elizabeth Ann Fisher. Could it be an error?

Regards Wendy
