The Common Room / Re: Wills, executors and solicitors
« on: Tuesday 01 May 18 14:33 BST (UK)  »
Many(Most?) solicitors hold wills for people whether or not they are executors of the will. It has been my experience that they search death notices and similar for information on people for whom they hold such wills.

When my MIL died a few years ago, we received phone calls from 2 different solicitor firms who held wills (neither being the current will) that she had made many years ago. I assume they tracked us through the funeral director - didn't think to ask.

It could also be that they have access to death registrations but you would need to ask a solicitor about that  :)

As folks have said above, in most cases the family know who holds the latest will/is executor and family would notify the solicitor.

Australia / Re: William MILLS Glasgow, Scotland to Moulamein, NSW?

did you find any info on William Mills?

Hello there - are you related to William Mills? The original poster is still on RC. If you have information to share you can post it here or contact "Sturdy" via a private message. Always interesting to see a connection some years down the track.

Australia / Re: Looking for Mary Violet
« on: Saturday 28 April 18 15:53 BST (UK)  »
I'm sure your lady has long passed - as many have said - married in 1934  would rarely, if ever equate to being alive today.

Difficulty of finding the death of Mary Violet could be the likelihood that she remarried. Do you know if  she had any children? Could she have settled with them in Australia?

Australia / Re: Broken Hill school records

The link from Cando appears to lead to NSW State records

https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/series/16906

and the detail suggests there are not a large number of years available. If there is a local historical society you may find they have more information. In other parts of NSW the local organisations have had the originals or copies of some school records.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Ancestry Menu

Thanks for replying Stan - just this instant its back to what it was - I did look at the customise but there didn't seem to be what I needed.

Sometimes I wonder about myself - I even waited before asking the question - guess I should have waited a little longer.

Census and Resource Discussion / Ancestry Menu
« on: Sunday 22 April 18 11:56 BST (UK)  »
Can someone tell me what I have done to my ancestry menu? Used to be across the top of the screen. Now I'm lost trying to search for anything I haven't previously saved in my favorites

Has it been changed? First time this has happened to me. Home page  has a sort of menu on the RHS

Couldn't get them all on the same post!

That is an amazing funeral card for the family to have retained. Thank you for sharing.

Westward, potentially a cover up then :)
I hope to have attached adult Jane's parish burial record

Just saving everyone a little money. In my part of the world births had to be registered within 30 days. Back in the day I have some ancestors whose birth dates were altered to comply with this requirement  :) You also have to put date of marriage on birth certificates. One large family had one child before the marriage, so they registered her with her younger sister's date of birth. All very confusing.

Edit: Thanks for the baptism record - interesting to see the change of detail from child to mother
