Assuming that the middle name of Smith has not come from his mothers side of the family, then there is a very good chance that his fathers name was Smith. Unfortunately I don't think knowing that is going to help unless you know of any Smith 'contacts' in the family.

There are only 3 Edgar Hollands in the 1861 census for England so there is a good chance that this is the right one.

I would have thought that if either of the two marriage parties lived in Bradfield then it would be shown as their address on the certificate.
I have also found a website with more information about Samuel Fox.
  www.espinet.freeserve.co.uk/stocks/fox.htm
This seems to confirm that he did have an older brother called George and that he was in the practice of involving his relatives in his business activities.
   Regards - Dave

No, sorry but that Sarah Ann was born in Sheffield. The closest I can get in 1871 is Sarah Slaney b.1853 Wickham Oxon. who is a servant in Ecclesall Bierlow, Sheffield.
I'm curious as to why they married in Sheffield when they were both born in Oxfordshire!
Sorry I can't help, but I've put it on my 'keep an eye open' list.

William Ibbotson son 8 Yorks. Worrall
Joseph Ibbotson son 7 Yorks. Worrall
Charles Ibbotson son 4 Yorks. Sheffield
Sarah J Ibbotson daur 2 Yorks. Warncliffe Side

I don't have an index for 1851 so for now I will have to put it  on my 'keep an eye open' list.

As a matter of interest I have a Martha Ibbotson (b. Sheffield 1812) - parents Joseph Ibbotson and Martha Whittles - in my tree. She married Benjamin Wilson in 1831. Does this ring any bells with you?

We seem to be thinking along the same lines here. I am curious as to why Edwin married at Bradfield. Is it just a coincidence that Samuel Fox lived in this parish?
Do you think it is possible that George and Samuel were brothers? The IGI has Samuel Fox bapt. 16 July 1815 Hope DBY parents William Fox and Mary. Also George Fox bapt. Nov 1805 Hope DBY parents William Fox and Mary.
I have also had look at Whites 1879 Directory and Edwin gets several mentions:-
  1.  He is listed as a resident of Dore -  'Edwin Fox manufacturer Sheffield'
  2.  In the commercial section is - 'Fox Edwin & co 10 Castle Hill Sheffield and Millwall, London E' listed in three categories Galvanizers, Telegraph Apparatus Mfrs. and Wire Drawer & Mfrs.
so it would seem that his step up from drapers assistant was quite a big one!
I have also noticed that his age is shown as 44 in both the 1871 and 1881 census. I suspect that it is an error in 1871.
