Many thanks indeed to you all.  The links are going to be really useful.

Thank you very much for your advice - it would have taken me weeks to find these links.

Off to research ....

Jackie.

Hello

Although I have managed to crack the standard genealogy traces I am at a bit of a loss with the military side.  I have done a 'look up' for who I believe may be my great uncle who served in the second world war but I am not sure if there is any way I can search for more info.  The info I have found (via the death records) is:

Robert J Miller
L/Cpl
3317358
HLI (which I believe stands for Highland Light Infantry)
1945  v.8 263

I would be really grateful if someone could point me in the right direction of where I may be able to find out more info.  How would I really know if it was him?  Are there records which says which town they are from? What they did in the Army etc ?

Any help would be greatly received.  Many thanks
Jackie

Hello

Many thanks indeed for the info.  Unfortunately I don't have an image of the back of the photo.  I think it must have been blank as I usually copy them if there is anything of use.  I will try and track down the original photo and take a second look.

This info is really good, many thanks to you all.  Please excuse my ignorance but as I am trying to pinpoint who the photo is I could do with knowing if it is English or Manx - Did the manx have different uniforms?

It is sooo good having experts!!

Hello

I wonder if anyone can help.  I have found this photo in my Grandmothers possessions and I am assuming it is a World War One photo as it is similar to others I have.  I would really appreciate if you could confirm if it is WW1 and if there is anything else you can tell me about the photo, uniform etc I would really appreciate it.

I suspect it will be of someone called Camm or Miller from the Cumbria / Westmorland area or possibly even Isle of Man.

Many thanks
Jackie
