My ggg-grandfather Samuel Hodges was in the Coastguard and mostly based around Dublin and North Wicklow here in Ireland. The last record I have of his service is in 1850 when he was there transferred to the 184 tonne, Gun-Brig the HMS Pelter. The next record I have for him is in August 1854 in Cork when he marries a Nurse.
I believe that Coastguards were a reserve of the Navy at this time and that many were called into service in the Crimean War. This conflict seems to have started in early 1854. Cork was a major port with a naval base and I am wondering if Samuel was called up and injured or is this timeframe too short ?
any ideas on this would be most welcome...
thanks,
Shane.
