Occupation Interests / Coastguard/Crimea
« on: Saturday 16 August 08 10:47 BST (UK)  »
My ggg-grandfather Samuel Hodges was in the Coastguard and mostly based around Dublin and North Wicklow here in Ireland. The last record I have of his service is in 1850 when he was there transferred to the 184 tonne, Gun-Brig the HMS Pelter. The next record I have for him is in August 1854 in Cork when he marries a Nurse.

I believe that Coastguards were a reserve of the Navy at this time and that many were called into service in the Crimean War. This conflict seems to have started in early 1854. Cork was a major port with a naval base and I am wondering if Samuel was called up and injured or is this timeframe too short ?

any ideas on this would be most welcome...

thanks,

Shane.

I dont know if you've used http://www.irish-roots.ie, the search is free but you pay (5 Euro) to view each transcription. Not every county is online but Tipperary is.  I had a quick look and saw some possible matches for your query -

Co. Tipperary is divided for many purposes into two ridings - the southern part has a border with Co. Cork

North Riding

Occupation Interests / Re: Occupation: Provisions Dealer?
« on: Friday 15 August 08 11:57 BST (UK)  »
thanks for that,

the reason I was wondering is that he is on a road with numerous Grocers, a Dairyman, Confectioner a Green Grocer and other shops and was wondering if the provision's meant something different.

The address does look like a shop - not enough space that I can see for a warehouse.

Occupation Interests / Occupation: Provisions Dealer?
« on: Friday 15 August 08 11:30 BST (UK)  »
I recently found details on an ancestor here in Dublin who is listed on a birth cert. and in Slaters as a Provisions Dealer in Ballybough Road. Does this mean he was a type of grocery/food distributor or is it a type of shop dealing with specific goods ?

thanks,

Shane.

Offaly (Kings) / Re: King's County landlords/ land agents

the key to James Cathcarts early life has been from a marriage cert I recently located. It is from the registration district of Parsonstown in 1847, which has his residence and occupation details. We knew he was a Land Steward from his sons birth cert  in Dublin the year following his marriage. I know his father was also named James but I dont know if he was involved in similar Estate employment somewhere.

I am taking an educated guess at his employer from an analysis of the townland using Griffiths, nobody else seems to own any land in that area - so I assume that if James lived in Bellair the chances are he worked there also.

I dont know much more than this about him or his employer at this stage. I do have a 1inch map of Offaly showing the Estate & House and have a 6 inch map ordered which I am hoping might give more clues about the buildings on the estate.

Hello, I just registered and saw your query.

One of my ancestors 'James Cathcart' worked as a Land Steward in the townland of Bellair near Clara up to about 1847/48. Most if not all of the land in this townland is owned by a Thomas Homan Mullock and the area contains a large house and estate, also named Bellair, that I believe my ancestor worked on. At this time I dont know much more about James other than he married Susan Wilson from Leabeg King's County in 1847 and moved to a new employer in Fairfield Estate, Artane, Dublin in late 1847 or early 1848.
