Norfolk / Help finding Brae House, Brundall
« on: Sunday 12 June 22 14:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I am hoping someone with superior local knowledge of Brundall in Norfolk will be able, and willing, to help me find Brae House. One of my grand aunts, Emily Pratt lived there with her husband George Walter Pratt in 1956. I've looked high and low on the WWW without success. The address comes from Emily's death certificate, however her sister-in-law registered Emily's death at Downham (Emily died at 47 Munsons Place, Feltwell) so I am not sure if the sister-in-law got the address quite right. Why Emily's husband didn't register the death I have no idea, perhaps her death was so sudden (Coronary Thrombosis) he was incapable of going through the registration process. My thinking is, perhaps BRAE House has a similar sounding name close by.

Thank you so much for your replies and for the explaination of the end bit for tightening handle screws / bolts. Fascinating. Amazing that things have moved on so quickly that such tools aren't recognised these days, and are probably no use any longer except to those still using classic aged equipment.

Thanks again

Philip

Hello everyone

A friend of mine called Bill has an old metal item which has a military mark on it, though I cannot see it myself and it is dated 1915. We are wondering what the thing is. We're hoping someone here will know. Made of Sheffield Steel. Photos are of each side.

Thank you

Philip & Bill

The row of houses was not there at the time of the map survey of 1859 that was published in 1865. The row was on the revised 1896 map. That's all I can tell you for now. If you have the Title Deeds to look at there must be many clues in them as to the plot of land they were built on, who owned the land, who built the houses and who the first owner or tenant was. I had to the Title Deeds to my previous old house and the information was amazing with outline plans of the old farm that the houses were built on, the various measurements of land like roods and perches the farmer the land was bought from and the purchasers of the land, who then went on to have the houses built.

If you look back through this thread to my reply at number 8, the old drawing of the site gives a clue at least to what the back of the houses looked like with thier gardens, in fact side away from the road might well have been considered the 'fronts' at that time. It certainly looks quaint for being on the edge of an industrial site. If you cannot see the cottages on that reply use the grey scroll bar under the image to scroll to the right and you will see the cottages at far right.

You mention they were from the vicinity of Greenhead.
Not far south of Greenhead is a thing called Measlings Cleugh. I don't see any residential dwellings there excepting for Measlings Cottage just north of New Angerton. It's about the closest thing I can come up with to Mewslands..... given the area, dialect and what somebody writing something down might have thought they heard said.

I have been looking at this map surveyed in 1861 and published 1865.

There is the Catholic Church at Thropton with its small burial ground.

Some grave info here;

Not sure if that helps you at all.

I know it is a long time since the original post was made, but yes, I do now have a photo of Red House Farm! Came across it quite recently and bought it, snapped it up.

I hope there is still interest in the subject.

The photo of Fred Milburn has been returned to a surviving family member who is thrilled to see him and add him to their family photo album.

Very interesting thanks for that.

I really enjoy how bits and pieces of information about people and buildings changes ones perspective and appreciation for what is around.

Love it!
