Europe / Re: Louisa Weiss
« on: Thursday 05 October 23 01:39 BST (UK)  »
Hiya

Welcome to Rootschat!

Louisa Charlotte Amelia Sharpe nee Weiss, stated that her place of birth was Buckeburg, Germany on the 1921 census. At the time of the 1921 census she was 76 years of age, and lived on Lovell Road, Winkfield near Bracknell.

One other fact that she stated on the 1911 census was that she was Naturalized in 1867.

A marriage certificate has been sent for.

This is the marriage ref for her and Charles Sharpe; Q3 1869 Easthampstead Vol 2c Pg 731

I had wondered if she was Jewish, but after much thought I'm guessing she was more likely to be a Lutheran. I am very interested to know why she left Germany for Britain, and where her family originated from.

Northumberland / Re: Jackson, Born Newcastle, Northumberland.

1921 census Jenny was living at 10 Windsor Street, Darlington. Her 'father' deceased by that time. She was with her 'mother' and four other 'siblings', James Sykes, George Norman, Fred and Grace Eva.

Her age at the time of the 1921 census was stated as 25 years and 1 month, giving a birth date of Q2 1896.

I looked long hand through the Q2 1896 birth indexes for a Jackson / Jane / Jenny / Jessie etc and the only one that came up as  born at Newcastle was a Jenny Jackson Q2 1896 Newcastle T. vol 10b pg 69, and her mother's maiden name on the GRO is Robinson!

I am not saying I have the correct individual for you. Perhaps there is a story to be told about Jenny or her 'parents'. I hope others will be able to help out too.

If this was my family history I'd risk buying the certificate as a PDF and see what it says.

The research I had done previously with the research added by everyone here, leads me to the triangular area of Tuam, Glenamaddy and Mountbellew, I had hoped to identify a particular house or dwelling, but that might never happen, however I am happy enough to have found the general area they originated from. It also fits with the information found here on the WWW;

http://burkeseastgalway.com/concannon/

Note mention of the places Glenamaddy, Ballygaddy and Tuam.

I am curious about the 'elephant' on the coat of arms, my immediate thought was that it reminds me of a bear with a salmon in its mouth......

All interesting stuff. I just wish the research was easier than it is, though that said, I am doing this all from my armchair at home and not travelling to various places and archives trawling through masses of old documents where they exist, so I suppose I have it an awful lot easier than previous generations who did not have the benefit of the Internet!

Once again, thank you all for participating! I am happy to continue to receive more input though if it is forthcoming.

A brief note to say thank you to everyone that has participated thus far and tried to help me fathom this out. You can all see and understand my plight.

My long term aim, since the Concannon family is not genetically mine, is to be able to discover where the Concannon clan originated and then take one of their descendents (a very dear friend of mine) to visit their plot of land and or farm.

Thanks again.......

Hopefully more information or ideas will come to light.

Oh, by the way his name on the 1871 census has been transcribed as Patrick Cuncannor.

Galway / Totally Perplexed by Irish Place Name "Barney Arrah" Galway
« on: Tuesday 14 March 23 00:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hello every body, I have been doing some research about a Patrick Concannon, born somewhere in County Galway circa 1851.

I have him on the 1871 census entry 196, age 20, living with his parents and sibling nextdoor to Little Ireland, Little Hulton and working as Coal Miner  (UNMARRIED)

Civil parish   Little Hulton
Ecclesiastical parish   Deane
County/Island   Lancashire
Country   England
Registration district   Bolton
Sub-registration district   Hulton
ED, institution, or vessel   4
Household schedule number   196
Piece   3920
Folio   94
Page number   40

His place of birth has been listed as Barney Arrah  ???, and I have no idea what that is supposed to mean. I'm guessing the Enumerator struggled to understand a strong Irish accent and wrote down what he thought he heard. My best guess is perhaps something to do with Barna (Bearna) and possibly Cappagh Park, but don't let that idea limit your thinking.

I am totally perplexed as to where it might actually be, so I thought I'd post the subject here and see what you good folk come up with.

Many thanks in advance for any input from you all.
