Europe / Norwegian genealogy..where do I start?
« on: Friday 30 July 10 12:26 BST (UK)  »
My aunt Alice Norma Gill married KARL THOGER ANDRESEN on the 17th Jan 1942 Mansfield, Notts.
On the wedding cert it states that Karl was 18yrs of age (1923) and a gunner in Royal Navy, his father is named as Karl Marenluis Andresen profession :wholesale General Dealer.
I have found out the Karl Thoger Andresen was killed in action on the 4th Jan 1943, he was serving on HMS Bodo which hit a mine off the east coast of Scotland.
Now I come to a full stop...how do I find out where Karl (junior and senior) came from in Norway?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Armed Forces / Totally Confused !
« on: Sunday 21 February 10 20:43 GMT (UK)  »
I have a person in my tree that has me totally confused on whether he was actually in the Army or not!

Isaac Fincher b. 1808 Evesham, Worcestershire

Isaac’s children are mentioned in Army Births all state Isaac was in the 95th Regt:

Mary Ann  1839 Nottingham
Isaac 1846 Cape of Good Hope SA
Charles 1848 Mansfield
Harriett 1851 West Stockwith
Selina 1852 West Stockwith
Caroline 1854 Derby
Emma 1859 Derby
Eliza 1862 Derby

I have found  son Charles’s baptism in Mansfield which states father Isaac was a policeman

1851 census West Stockwith, Notts
HO107/2119 fol 405 page 18

Isaac’s profession is down as a policeman

1861 census Derby Derbyshire
RG9/2502 fol 39 page 9
Militia Barracks

Isaac’s profession is down as Srg. Major 1st Derby Militia

The National Archives have this:
ISAAC FINCHER
Born EVESHAM, Worcestershire
Served in 45th Foot Regiment
Discharged aged 40

Isaac died 13th Aug 1867 Derby, Derbyshire

Would some kind person make sense of this for me, was Isaac in the 1st Derbyshire, the 95th Regiment or the 45th Foot Regiment….or was he a policeman!

Many thanks

Armed Forces / William Lockton
« on: Saturday 15 August 09 14:56 BST (UK)  »
I have a William Lockton b. 1818 Grantham, Lincs, he married Sarah Wilson 1838 Silk Willoughby, Lincs. I have him on the 1841 Census with Sarah and family. The next mention of William is in a Bastardy Order wife Sarah is making against an Edward Pidd:

Grantham Court of Petty Sessions 15th. September 1848, reported in The Lincoln, Rutland & Stamford Mercury 22nd. September 1848

Sarah wife of Wm. LOCKTON, of Marston, applied for an order in Bastardy. She was a married woman but her husband enlisted three years ago and is now at Corfoo: an old fellow named Edw. PIDD, finding her in rather a destitute condition, and he being a widower, first engaged her to attend to his house, and ultimately to cohabit with him, by which means she kept herself out of the workhouse: the old man was left with a family of six children, the youngest of whom is 14 years of age.......Pidd was ordered to pay 1s 6d per week and the midwifery expenses.

This means that William presumably joined the army in abt 1845
In 1861 census I have him at the Military Moaliding (Invaliding) Depot St Marys Barracks No 1 , Gillingham, Kent.
What regiment would William have been in? and are there
 any records I could access?

many thanks

« on: Friday 17 July 09 18:03 BST (UK)  »
I have a Louis Collis in my tree who was killed in action 5 May 1917 France. From records gleaned off the internet I have found out that he was a Private in 8th Battallion Bedfordshire Regiment (No 33256) formerly 30443 Essex Regiment. My question is were any Essex Regiments attached to the 8th Bedfordshire or would Louis have transferred? Any info gratefully received ;D
