Hello All,

I've been browsing the free census index access and think I've found a missing person  :)

I'm looking for James Cruddace born 1825 at Bishopton, Durham. An unmarried joiner. I came across a James Curtis born c1826 at Bishopston, Durham, living in Bradford, Yorks. and listed as  Boarder Daur  ???

I'd be grateful if someone could check him out to see if he is a possible.

Regards,
Colin

Hello all,

Could someone please check in 1871 for Betty Bainbridge born 1825 Yorkshire, living at Liversedge, Dewsbury, Yorks.

I am particularly interested in her marital status and birthplace. In all probability she is not who I would like her to be, so please don't do any further checking.

Thanks for any help,
Colin

Australia Lookups completed / Emigration to Melbourne, 1856 - COMPLETED with Thanks
« on: Tuesday 30 November 10 22:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I have found emigration details for Robt. Hodgson age 27, arrived Nov 1856 Melbourne from Liverpool on board "White Star", nationality English. Is there any way of finding other details about him? I am trying to find Robert Hodgson born August 1828 at Lumley, County Durham, and he seems to be a good candidate.

Thanks for any help.

Armed Forces / RN Medal Awards WW1 - Abbreviations
« on: Wednesday 24 November 10 22:56 GMT (UK)  »
I have the entries for 2 Gt Uncles and would appreciate some help with them.

CRUDDACE Reuben, AB, 217105, St, V, B, "Erin"
217105, CRUDDACE R, Medal No. 3434, AB (written above in smaller capitals is CK), RN, 7.2.22, R/ARF Nocc HSNL

I think this means he was awarded the trio while serving aboard HMS Erin on 7 Feb 1922, but what does the CK mean above his rank? And can anyone explain the final bit after the date? The entry wasn't clear and Nocc could well be wrong.

READSHAW Jas. S, ERA3, M 6901, St, V, B, W/T Stn Bathurst
M 6901, READSHAW JS, Medal No. 8332, ERA1, 19.2.29, Scythe Gm
Also a Long Service Good Conduct Award
Claim No. 43980, READSHAW James Sydney, ERA1, M 6901, Scythe 20.2.29

What does W/T Stn Bathurst mean and what does Gm mean after HMS Scythe?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Armed Forces / UK Naval Medal and Awards Roll - COMPLETED Thanks
« on: Monday 22 November 10 23:05 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if a Captain in the Merchant Navy is likely to appear in these Rolls?

There is a Captain J Cruddace listed on Ancestry's search, but I don't have a subscription, and I suspect it may be James Cruddace born 1866, Bishopton, County Durham.

Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks,
Colin

The Common Room / Leaving a young family behind
« on: Friday 05 November 10 02:48 GMT (UK)  »
I have often seen references to coal miners (and others) setting off for the promised land, leaving their wives and children behind to join them later when they had made enough to send for them.

I am wondering how a wife with 2 or 3 young children would be expected to live  ???

Would she be allowed to remain in a miner's cottage if none of the family actually worked in a pit, and how would she eke out a living  ??? ???

It sounds an impossible situation but it did happen. I doubt if she would qualify for Parish relief, so how did they do it?

Durham Completed Look up Requests / 1857 Baptism Wingate - COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 30 October 10 19:50 BST (UK)  »
I have a death cert for Ralph Hepplewhite Hodgson who died at Wingate on 25 Feb 1858, age 1 1/2 years.

It is a strange way of expressing an age and the only registration seems to be June quarter 1857, which would make him less than 1 year old.

Can anyone find a baptism at Wingate please? The mother would be Sarah whose husband was Robert who may not be mentioned.

Thanks,
Colin

Durham Completed Look up Requests / 1871 census puzzle - COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 27 October 10 21:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I received a bith cert this morning which confirms that Thomas was the son of Robert & Sarah Hodgson, born 9.8.1861 at Wingate.

On 21.8.1872 there is a burial at Monk Hesledon of Thomas Hodgson of Castle Eden Colliery, aged 11.

There is no sign of him on the 1871 census, but searching for Thomas (without a surname) born 1860-1862, and a keyword of wingate, shows one of the hits as Thomas H?? born 1862 Wingate living in the Distfict and sub-District of Easington.

I'd appreciate it if someone could check this out to see who he is living with.

Thanks,
Colin
