World War Two / DUNKEY, George - WWII Able Seaman - H.M.S. Sceptre
« on: Thursday 06 March 14 20:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm currently researching an Able Seaman who died during WWII.

George DUNKEY b. 03/03/1924 Wednesbury, Staffs
d. 01/08/1944 Presumed Drowned, Body Lost Overboard
H.M.S. Sceptre (P215) S-Class Submarine

What I've done so far;

1) Bought a death certificate for George DUNKEY.

2) Made a "third-party/genealogy" request to obtain service records.

I yesterday received copies of documents from George DUNKEY's service records. The documents I've received have proved a little disappointing and I was wondering what other people's experiences have been. This is the first time I've seen WWII service records and have no means of making a comparison. Is what I've received standard?

I've attached scanned images of what I was sent in the hope that I can get someone's opinion of what I've received. I was sent only two sides from the service records plus a typed list of George DUNKEY's service history between 09/11/1942 and 01/08/1944.

Does it look like something, anything has been "held-back"? The cause of death is giving me concern. How does a man get "lost-overboard" on a submarine, for instance? I feel there is more to this story and would really value a second pair of eyes and any thoughts/opinions on what the RN have given me and George DUNKEY's cause of death.

Many, many thanks for reading. In anticipation, Rowan Tree  :)

Hi,

I've been looking at a scan of a burial register on Ancestry and would appreciate a second pair of eyes. I'm not sure I'm reading the entry correctly and would really value someone, who's reading this post, to attempt to decipher the hand-written entry of burial.

I'm particularly interested in deciphering the abode and the letters/numbers wrote in the left-hand margin.

If you follow this link you can see an earlier post from me on Roots where there is an image of the left-hand margin;

Lancashire / Burial at Walton Park Cemetery, Liverpool - COLLINS
« on: Wednesday 26 February 14 22:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help me with a burial?

I've found the following burial on Ancestry;

Walton Park Parochial Cemetery, Rice Lane, Liverpool
Catherine COLLINS
Birth: 1929
Age: 17 months
Burial: 26/06/1930
Abode: 42 Belmont Road, Walton
Reference Number: 283 WAL/4/2/22

Does anyone know how I go about finding the grave in the cemetery? Also, I've no idea if the grave was public/private or if anyone else was interred in the plot.

I'm not sure where to go from here. Any advice?

Many thanks, Rowan Tree  :)

Hi,

I'm struggling to find a death and a marriage in the St. Helens, Lancs area and wondered if anyone reading would be able to lend a helping hand?

Here's who I have;

John LEYLAND
Born c. 1862 in St. Helens.

Appears on the 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses.
John's wife, Sarah nee HANKINSON appears on the 1911 census remarried.
So.... I'm assuming John LEYLAND dies between 1901 and 1911 and Sarah remarries after her first husband dies. But, I can't find John's death or Sarah's second marriage???

Sarah HANKINSON
B. 15/01/1867 in Talk O' the Hill, Staffordshire.

John and Sarah married - St. Peter, Parr 26/07/1886.

John and Sarah on the 1901 Census:
Registration district: Prescot
Sub-registration district: St Helens
ED, institution, or vessel: 37
Piece: 3525
Folio: 46
Page Number: 22
Household schedule number: 126

Sarah appears with her second husband (James WHITFIELD) on the 1911 census as follows:
Address - 289 Clock Face Road, Sutton, St. Helens
Head - James WHITFIELD
Age - 45 (1865)
Born - St. Helens, Lancs
Wife - Sarah WHITFIELD
Age - 43 (1868)
Born - Stafford, Staffs
Married 4 years (2 children born, 2 children died)
(3 children from Sarah's first marriage are also living at the address).

« on: Sunday 23 February 14 21:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Wondering if anyone could help me in deciphering an occupation on the 1841 census?

John LACEY
Age: 45 (c. 1796)
Born: Ireland
Civil Parish: Prescot
Hundred: West Derby
County/Island: Lancashire
Registration district: Prescot
Sub-registration district: St Helen
Piece: 517

Unfortunately, there is an ink splodge in the middle of the occupation and I'm really struggling to make sense of what is beneath the splodge (I think it begins with a 'T' though).

Many thanks for reading,
