World War Two / DUNKEY, George - WWII Able Seaman - H.M.S. Sceptre
« on: Thursday 06 March 14 20:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I'm currently researching an Able Seaman who died during WWII.
George DUNKEY b. 03/03/1924 Wednesbury, Staffs
d. 01/08/1944 Presumed Drowned, Body Lost Overboard
H.M.S. Sceptre (P215) S-Class Submarine
What I've done so far;
1) Bought a death certificate for George DUNKEY.
2) Made a "third-party/genealogy" request to obtain service records.
I yesterday received copies of documents from George DUNKEY's service records. The documents I've received have proved a little disappointing and I was wondering what other people's experiences have been. This is the first time I've seen WWII service records and have no means of making a comparison. Is what I've received standard?
I've attached scanned images of what I was sent in the hope that I can get someone's opinion of what I've received. I was sent only two sides from the service records plus a typed list of George DUNKEY's service history between 09/11/1942 and 01/08/1944.
Does it look like something, anything has been "held-back"? The cause of death is giving me concern. How does a man get "lost-overboard" on a submarine, for instance? I feel there is more to this story and would really value a second pair of eyes and any thoughts/opinions on what the RN have given me and George DUNKEY's cause of death.
Many, many thanks for reading. In anticipation, Rowan Tree
