Hi,

It looks like there are two HITCHMOUGH's as witnesses to this marriage but I'm really struggling to decipher the given names of the witnesses. Anyone think they can read it?

Many thanks in anticipation  :)

Lancashire / HARRISON / DAVIES 1910 marriage & 1911 census
« on: Thursday 09 March 17 14:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Wondering if anyone can lay their eyes on a marriage and/or 1911 census for the following couple;

James HARRISON m. Amelia DAVIES
Q1 1910 - Prescot reg. district

I don't really have anything else I'm afraid.

I'm trying to work out the parents for Peter HARRISON b. 04/10/1918 and thought the above couple maybe a match. A baptism for Peter would be helpful if anyone has access to that.

Many thanks for reading

Hi, trying to find the birth/baptism of John HEWITT c. 1789 in Prescot.

What I do know;

17/07/1812 - John married Mary WILCOCK at All Saints, Rainford. Married by banns. Witnessed by James YATES, Jane HEWITT and George HEWITT.

Appeared on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census living in Prescot and working as a watchmaker / watch and chronometer pinion maker.

Fathered the following children with wife, Mary;
Elizabeth 1812
Ann 1815

Thomas 1822
Joshua 1824
Jane 1827

John died 16/11/1866 in Prescot
Buried 21/10/1866 at St. Mary the Virgin, Prescot.

Anyone think they can come up with a birth/baptism for John and possible parents or siblings?

Many thanks for reading,

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Cockermouth Burial - BLACK, Agnes - 1817
« on: Wednesday 13 January 16 12:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've got an index to a burial off Ancestry and Find My Past but I'm wondering if anyone has access to the PR or BT? I'm looking for any extra detail on top of what the index record gives.

This is what I have;

Agnes BLACK
Female
Buried 14 December 1817
Cockermouth, Cumberland

I'm hoping there is extra detail within the original record that might indicate Agnes' age, residence or marital status (or anything at all really).

I'm trying to find the death/burial of my Agnes BLACK nee PARTRIDGE. My Agnes was baptised in Grasmere in March 1771 (daughter of Edward and Dinah PARTRIDGE) and married Thomas Black in Grasmere in April 1791. I know of 9 children of Thomas and Agnes Black born between 1792 and 1808.

Any help very much appreciated.

Best Wishes, Rowan Tree  :)

England / PINCH, John - stone mason
« on: Sunday 03 January 16 01:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to work out where John PINCH is from. This is what I have;

John PINCH, a stone mason, married Ellen BRADBOURN 08/02/1796 at St. Mary, Lancaster. Married by banns. One of the witnesses was Charles PINCH (I think anyway, It's tricky to read).

Marrying a few years before (1791) in the same church is a Christopher PINCH, stone mason.

I don't believe John PINCH was actually from Lancaster but I don't know where he did come from. I keep seeing the name PINCH pop up in Cornwall and Devon, so I thought it's possible he was from the south-west but it's only really a hunch.

John PINCH died in 1830 and was buried at St. Mary, Lancaster. The age with the burial record gives an aprox. year of birth of 1770.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks, Rowan Tree  :)

England / Dinah HILL - Cumberland, Lancashire and Cheshire
« on: Monday 21 December 15 13:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Trying to find out more about Dinah HILL who I've so far found with connections to Cumberland, Lancashire and Cheshire. I'm hoping to find Dinah HILL before 1871 (and her marriage or maiden name would go down a treat - lol)

NOTE: HILL is Dinah's married name and I currently don't have her maiden name (but would love it).

Dinah HILL c. 1824 in Keswick, Cumberland.

Found on the following censuses;

1871
Sale, Cheshire

Dinah is living as a servant/cook (can't make out marital status)
Class: RG10; Piece: 3685; Folio: 53; Page: 18.

1881
Keswick, Cumberland

A widowed Dinah is living alone as a Lodging House Keeper
Class: RG11; Piece: 5170; Folio: 58; Page: 33.

1891
Sutton, St. Helens, Lancashire

A widowed Dinah is recorded as a cousin to the head of the household.
Head of household: John ROSCOE. John ROSCOE's wife is named Dinah nee BLACK. Note: although both John ROSCOE and Dinah nee BLACK are both born locally, Dinah nee BLACK's father, Edward BLACK was born in Grasmere, WESTMORLAND (so closer to Dinah HILL's birth place of Keswick, Cumberland).
Class: RG12; Piece: 3026; Folio: 73; Page: 26.

Probable death registration:
1892 April/May/June Quarter
Prescot, Lancashire (this fits with last know address on 1891 census).

Can anyone find Dinah HILL before 1871 or offer her marriage or maiden name?

Many thanks, Rowan Tree  :)

Cheshire / FORSTER - Somerford Booths - late 1700s to mid 1800s
« on: Monday 02 February 15 08:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

Found an interesting little puzzle in my tree and would love to get a fresh view on what I've found.

I'll try and keep this concise (and not too rambling or confusing - lol).

My main questions are: Was Margaret FORSTER ever really married and who was George FORSTER?

Here we go....

St. Mary, Astbury (BT off Find my Past - doesn't look like FindMyPast have the PR)
Bapt. 10/05/1812
Mary daughter of Margaret FORSTER, Somerford Booths

Mary's recorded age at burial, 58, gives a birth year of c. 1811 and her age on the 1851 and 1861 censuses give a birth year of c. 1812. These ages/aprox. birth years plus the fact that Margaret FORSTER lives next-door but one, on the 1841 Somerford Booths census, to her now married daughter, Mary ROBINSON, makes me think the above baptism is a good fit.

I've not found any siblings who look like a match for the above Mary and I've not found a marriage for Margaret FORSTER either before or after the baptism of her daughter.

I'd originally thought that Mary FORSTER was an illegitimate and only child.

Mary FORSTER goes on to marry Peter ROBINSON (31/12/1832 St. Mary, Astbury). Mary and Peter live their whole lives in Somerford Booths. Mary dies 1869 and is buried at St. Mary, Astbury.

I found Margaret FOSTER's burial as follows;
St. Mary, Astbury
02/05/1847
Margaret FORSTER, Somerford Booths, age 70

As I know so little about Margaret I decided to buy her death certificate (and this is where it gets puzzling).

For the most part the death cert. is pretty standard. For example, the death was registered by Margaret's son-in-law, Peter ROBINSON, which is what I would have expected. There is a slight anomaly in that both place of death and resident of informant is recorded as Congleton (both addresses should have been correctly recorded as either Newsbank, Somerford Booths or just plain old Somerford Booths). I believe the recording of 'Congleton' was the registrar being a bit lazy and simply entering the reg. district. Where the death cert. really sparks my interest is column 5 (occupation). Margaret FORSTER's occupation is recorded as; "Widow of George FORSTER, labourer".

If no father is recorded with Mary's baptism (not even posthumously) and if I can't find any marriage of a George FORSTER to a Margaret in the right time-frame, then who was the George FORSTER on Margaret's death cert. and was she ever really married?

I've looked through the local PR's for any likely suspects for George FORSTER and the only George I can find (who is old enough to be Mary's father) is the following;

St. Mary, Astbury
Burial 06/04/1828
George FORSTER, Lockbrook
(or Lochbrook also known as Loachbrook), age 37 (so born c. 1791 making him around 21 at the time of Mary's birth).

There is a lady named Sue with a thread on RootsChat trying to find out more about the above George FORSTER. Sue is descended from a legitimate child of George's born through his marriage to Jane Bebington/Bebbington (George and Jane married 01/07/1816).

Any thoughts on this would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks, Rowan Tree  :)
