Armed Forces / Help with Army Barracks in Fleetwood?
« on: Sunday 31 January 10 23:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have found that one of my ancestors Marcus Monaghan was in the Army i knew this from his marrige cert i found him on the 1881 census he is listed in barracks in Fleetwood i can't read the rest.

How do i find out what regiment he was in and what was the name of the barracks i know he was in India in 1891 he had his wife and one son with him and his wife had a child over there.  His wife seemed to move near him wherever he was stationed until she had too many kids.

Also what wars would he have served in would it be the Boer war or others i don't know where to start with him.

Thanks for any help Louise

« on: Thursday 21 January 10 20:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I was wondering if someone could kindly look to see if there is a record of a Archiebald McCrea in the Boer War he would possibly been in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.

A couple of other people kindly helped with other McCreas which i am really grateful for where do you find information on medal rolls and casualty list's ect  is it the National Archives i am not too sure with military history i am just starting searching this area and any tips would be greatful also do the national archives hold the records for the merchant navy as i don't know where to start with them either.

Thanks Louise ;)

United States of America / Missing McCrea moved to the U.S help
« on: Monday 18 January 10 21:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I don't know if anyone can help i am truly stuck I am looking for a Archiebald McCrea he was born in Ireland probably around Enniskillen Co. Fermanagh between 1863 and 1885.  He moved to Glasgow between 1900 and 1930 he was the black sheep of the family and was a alcoholic and lived rough for a while in Glasgow the salvation army helped him sober up and i know he then emmigrated to the U.S.

He is a nightmare as no one can find his birth and i have tried looking for him on the U.S census and passenger lists but have had no luck but i don't know if i was searching right.   The whole family were embarrassed of him and he was not to be spoke of  he is not on the irish 1911 census so i am guessing he was in scotland before then i was starting to think he was made up until i got in contact with a second cousin who had also heard of him and had started to also think he was made up till she met me she wrote to a elderly aunt who remembers meeting him once she can't remember if it was in Ireland or Glasgow she said her father his brother spoke to him for a few minutes so i know he exists.

I can't find him over here so my hope is he is somewhere recorded in the U.S If anyone can help it would be great but i feel he is a lost cause

Thanks Louise  ???

Worcestershire / Masonic lodges Dudley
« on: Sunday 16 August 09 19:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have been struggling to find my grandfather x5 birth date.  I think he was born in Rugeley but lived and had his own sucessful hatting business in Dudley.  Someone suggested that if he was a business man he may have been a mason and that i could contact them and see if they had any info on their records.

I would not know where to start with this and with them being a bit on the secretive side lol would they tell me anything and would they actually keep records from the early 1800's.

I dont think i will get very far with this but anything is worth a try.

Thanks Louise :D
