It is also worth bearing in mind that, from 1837, marriages could take place in a Register Office, and therefore the only record will be the purchase of the certificate.

The Lighter Side / Re: Not wearing gloves when looking at old artefacts

I'm asked to wear latex gloves at Lichfield archives, when handling parchment documents.  Mine are absolutely filthy, but I'm only following instructions.  I tend to wear cotton gloves inside, as I hate the clammy feel of latex, and I can slip off one glove in order to write.   :)

The Lighter Side / Re: Nominate your rootschat FEELGOOD helpers

I, personally, think that the majority of RootsChat members deserve a nomination.

Most of us are willing to help those who are unable, for various reasons, to carry out their own research.   I have helped people from New Zealand, Australia etc in their quest for English information, and have, in turn been helped on my overseas queries.

It's a give and take ideal  :) :)

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: 1939 Register up and running (Part 3)

I'm with you msr on identity cards.  I will never forget, just a few years ago, watching a stage of the Tour de France when two young Dutch lads tried to drive their car in a restricted area.  The French police stopped them and then confiscated their identity cards.  Those lads were as meek as anything, made not a movement until their cards were returned some while later.

Perhaps they should be reinstated here.  I've nothing to hide, so no objections from me.

I found it on Ancestry - London baptisms, marriages, and burials 1538 - 1812.

Whilst I cannot see the baptisms, there is a burial at St Saviour on 3 May 1761 for William son of Joseph Whitaker, brewer's servant, infant.

South Africa / Re: Byrne Settlers

If you want to have a good idea of the hardships, etc. of the Byrne Settlers, then get hold of a copy of Dear Louisa - letters between sister's, one a Byrne settler, the other in London.  It is a wonderful insight into early Settler life.  I visited Byrne in February, and saw Ellen McLeod's grave.

Possibly we need OP to confirm what he already has.  We have a variety of surnames - Stanway, Sherratt, Lee and Hitchman, with an option for a number of marriages, plus the forenames of Elizabeth Emily, or the use of just one of them.

Certificates or parish register entries are required to verify authenticity.

I'm assuming that you have your grandparents' marriage certificate and that it states that both were widowed.  1911 states that Elizabeth Emily Lee had been previously married for 17 years and Simeon for 20 years.

The certificate should also state her original surname, via the information for her father.
