May I ask where you found the 1875 birth year from?  Using FreeBMD I cannot see a birth registration for Elizabeth or Emily Stanway in 1875, although there is an entry for EmilyElizabeth in 1874 in the Congleton area (covering Biddulph).

I can't, off hand, remember the last time I bought a certificate.  Parish register entries are good enough for my needs, especially marriage entries where you get the original signatures of the people concerned.  ;D

John's baptism entry states he is the son of John Gilbank, labourer or pinder (sic) - 15 January 1762

Added:  pinder is the name given to someone who compounds stray animals.

"the main archives I need are easily accessible"

But not everyone is so conveniently situated.  I don't have a single ancestor who ever set foot in Ecuador.  They all were born, lived and died in other countries, 5,000-10,000 km from where I live.

However, perhaps the records for those countries are available via the internet, and therefore are accessible, even if it means paying for a subscription.  I think (I may be wrong) that the gripe is with those people who expect others to supply the information for free.

What I find amazing  are those people  who have been on here for 8 or 9 years  and claim not to be able to use  Free BMD

But then if you've got some "fool" to do it for you, you don't have to do it for yourself :o

I have to admit that there are certain OPs who I refuse  to even consider helping - very sad, but you do get to recognize the 'takers' as opposed to the 'givers' and 'participants'.  All very well getting a particular piece of information, but by looking at the result for yourself, you often find that there is even more interesting information in adjacent records!!  Hey, ho ;D ;D

FreeBMD have a marriage in Sheffield March quarter 1850 where George Allen and Mary Thorndill appear on the same page.  I cannot see a Mary Ann in the area 1849-1855 with George.
