Herefordshire Lookup Requests / 1841 & 1851 Census - Gunter Look Up Please
« on: Wednesday 15 December 04 22:14 GMT (UK)  »
This is a bit vague as I don’t know a specific town name so I apologise in advance!

Looking for the following family in Herefordshire in 1841 census and/or in the 1851 census (minus John Gunter who I know is in Aberdare, Glamorgan in 1851)

Henry Gunter   Head   b Talgarth 1793    Shoemaker
Elizabeth Gunter   Wife   b Talgarth?
William Gunter   Son   b Talgarth 1823
John Gunter   Son   b Talgarth 1825   Smith
Elizabeth Gunter   Dau   b Talgarth 1827

Have had no luck finding them in Breconshire, Monmouth or Glamorgan – think they may be in Herefordshire but that’s a complete guess! Could someone check this for me please?

Many thanks

Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 Census Look Up - Gunter

Thanks for checking Rhys  :)

Have defintely established that Henry's wife's name was Elizabeth. John was definitely born in Talgarth 1825, also a brother William in 1823 and a sister Elizabeth 1827. I'll probaby give Herefordshire a go next!  ::)

Completed Census Requests / Re: Census Look Ups Davies & Griffiths 1841/1851

Hi there -

For the James and Griffiths family - Bwlch Mawr near Dinas Cross seem to be the towns that are mentioned consistently (marriage certificate and on subsequent Merthyr census records).

(There is a James James who acts as a witness to James & Hannah's marriage & he is based in Llanychaer. It may be the James family were based in Llanychaer and then moved to Bwlch Mawr but that's just conjecture on my part!  ???)

For the Davies family - Evan Davies consistently states that he was born in Llawhaden (nr Robeson Wathen & Narberth)

Hope this help! I really appreciate you taking the time to check this out for me - many thanks

Wales / Re: ebbw vale

The following description of Ebbw Vale is taken from Kelly's Directory of Monmouthshire, 1901:

"EBBW VALE is a parish constituted by Order of the Monmouth County Council, confirmed by an Order of the Local Government Board, dated November 19, 1894, and previously formed into an ecclesiastical parish in the year 1870 from the civil parishes of Aberystruth and Bedwellty, comprising the following places: Ebbw Vale, Briery Hill, Newtown, Pontygof and Victoria."

County Councils, Borough Counties - they sure liked to confuse us!  ::)

Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / 1841 Census Look Up - Gunter

John Gunter (son) was born in Talgarth in 1825. On his marriage certificate he is noted as being a Smith and his father Henry Gunter is recorded as being a Shoemaker. I believe Henry was also born in Talgarth c 1800.

Have had no luck finding them on Talgarth area or Glamorgan 1841 census (John was married in Merthyr Tydfil and eventually settled in Cwmbach).

Is there any chance someone can check out the Monmouth census to see if they were living over the border in 1841 please?

Many thanks

[Edit] Apologies, I neglected to mention that the areas I suspect they may have moved to are Hay or Abergavenny - many thanks

Completed Census Requests / COMPLETED - Census Look Ups Davies & Griffiths 1841/1851
« on: Friday 10 December 04 17:56 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone can help with the below it would be very much appreciated.

1.Could someone run a search for William (b Llawhaden c1816 PEM) and Ann Davies (b Llangynin CMN c1809) with children Owen (1837), Ann (1839) & Mary (1841) on the 1841 Pembroke Census please??

2. Could someone search out Hannah (b 1823 or 1828? - Bwlchmawr or Dinas PEM) & Lewis James (b Llanfair? c1828) with daughter Elizabeth (b Bwlchmawr or Dinas PEM 1849) and maybe son John James (b Bwlchmawr or Dinas PEM 1851) in the 1851 Pembroke census please?

On Hannah Griffiths and Lewis James' marriage certificate (they were married at Tabor Chapel Dinas on September 24th 1848) they are both recorded as living in Bwlchmawr. Lewis' occupation is stated as being Servant in Husbandry (farm hand I suppose!)

Lewis' father is recorded as being Griffith James - Mason.

Hannah's father is recorded as being John Griffiths, Tailor.

3. Is there any chance that someone could look up the 1841 census to see if there is any record of Lewis and Hannah and their respective families/households? Sorry, I haven't a clue who their mothers or siblings were, however one of the witnesses to the marriage is recorded as being "Jas. James Llanychaer"  - the other being "David Llewhelin Forest"

In retrospect, this looks like a lot to ask - sorry but again if anyone could help...

Many thanks
