Technical Help / Re: Internet Explorer 8
« on: Tuesday 09 June 09 18:25 BST (UK)  »
Next to the bar where you type in the website address, you'll see a button that looks like a page torn in half.  Click on it, and it will turn green.  This puts IE8 into compatability mode for the site you're on.  There's also a "Compatability View Settings" in the Tools menu where you can manually add, remove or edit sites.

Thanks for trying to help - have done as you suggested but still experience same problem. I have emailed GR directly to see if they have any suggestions - will let you know what they say.  >:(

Has anyone had issues trying to access the site "GR" once they have updated/downloaded Explorer 8?

I'm running Windows XP - have updates automatically downloaded - last update asked me to download Explorer 8 - duly complied but since then everytime I try and access that site I get an immediate Explorer message screen that tells me that it has to shut down Explorer??

Hi Guiliana,

Arthur William Phillips was my 3rd cousin twice removed. I can confirm that his parents were Frederick Phillips (b1859) & Mary Chaplin (b c1853).

Frederick Phillips parents were Thomas Phillips (1828-1907) & Elizabeth Thomas (1831-91).

Thomas Phillips parents were Walter Phillips (1796-1867 - my 3rd Great Granduncle) & Sarah Worthington (1801-91).

Walter was the brother of James Phillips (1792-1871 - my Gtx3 Grandfather) - they were both children of Walter Phillips (1753-1820) & Margaret Evans (1752-1825).

Have lots of other info - drop me a PM and we can exchange data

All the best

Nigel  :)

It might be worth contacting the Library at Merthyr as I know they hold microfilm copies of quite a few Chapel records.

Monaghan / Coogan/Cooghan Family Castleblaney
« on: Thursday 21 May 09 13:36 BST (UK)  »
Is there anyone over in Co Monaghan (or local to the archives in Dublin) who would be able to check the following query for me?

My Gtx4 Grandmother was born between 1794 & 1800 at Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan, Ireland. Unfortunately her age fluctuates wildly on the census but her death certificate gives an age at death as 75 in 1869 - giving an approx. birth year of 1794.

Her name was Catherine COGHAN (also seen spelled as COOGHAN, COOGAN & COGAN - she also used COOK as a surname!!).

She may also have had a brother called Patrick COOGAN who was born in Castleblaney c1798 - possibly Mucknoe. He died in New York, USA c1848.

I believe there are several transcriptions of the local graveyard/memorials & I wondered if there was any mention contained in these transcripts of a COOGAN (or variations therof) that may help me trace her parents or any other siblings/relatives?

FYI - from what we can gather, Catherine Coogan must have moved to England c1820 (London/Greenwich or Southampton/Portsmouth area) but I suspect she may have had other siblings that also moved to Scotland (Glasgow) or emigrated to the USA, Canada & possibly Australasia.

Any suggestions as to how I may be able to research back further would also be welcomed.  :-[

If anyone can help with the above query, it would be very much appreciated.  :)

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Greenwich Heritage Centre
« on: Thursday 21 May 09 12:55 BST (UK)  »
Dear Dawn

Thank you very much indeed for going to all the trouble of looking this up for me. It is much appreciated.

I now know that William Biddle (aka Beadle, Beddell, Beatle!) served in the Royal Navy as a Cook. He is recorded as being the Cook on the Royal yacht The Royal George and its tender The Pantaloon and even served a short stint on HMS Victory!

The curious thing is he joined the Navy as a Cabin Boy in 1798 and his Naval record shows a 30 year gap before he served aboard ship again as a Cook. It looks like he must have been employed at Greenwich College in the intervening years - at least thats what I take "College Man" to mean.

If anyone has a better explanation of what a "College Man" was in Greenwich, I'd be very grateful.

Thank you once again  ;D

Thanks for the suggestion Valda - have already done that but they want £6.20 just to do the look-up and due to personal circumstances I can't afford that.

Thanks anyway  :)
