Alfred 8 not born in Kent (baptised Bethnal Green)
Joseph 5 not born in Kent (baptised Bethnal Green)
Elizabeth 3 not born in Kent (baptised Bethnal Green)
James 4m born in Kent (baptised Ramsgate)
HO107/469 book 6 folio 51 page 22

Possibly also Albert baptised 1843 Whitechapel?

It doesn't look as though they were in Ramsgate for very long.

Have you actually found them in Australia and, if so, where?

A birth certificate for James would give his the maiden name of his mother but there are two to choose from $:-\$

I think you are right to discount the John HAFFENDEN and Elizabeth VINY. Their marriage states John to be of Ashford and there are baptisms for children in Ashford.

Birth certificates don't actually state illegitimate, the mere absence of any details for the father is what tells us it is an illegitimate birth. If there is only one surname for the mother then assume single woman, for a married woman it would say "Mary SMITH formerly JONES" etc.. Similarly for baptisms, it isn't always noted whether the mother is single, widowed or whatever and if no father is listed one would assume illegitimacy ......... all quite "normal".

Have you looked on http://www.findmypast.co. where there are quite a few parish registers for East Kent?

Any other clues ie. where did he live post marriage? When/where buried and age given? Occupation? Any will? Any other APPLETONs in Herne Bay who may be connected?
