Sandy: Thank you for clarifying!
Valda: Thank you for the background information!

I heard back from the Northampton archives, who confirmed their prison records for the County Gaol start in 1856, so too late to include my uncle William. They referred me to the British Archives (but oddly included the web address for the General Record Office rather than the archives; oh well), which I consulted this morning.

If I understand the archives website, this page includes the listing of assizes records for criminal trials: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=156

Looks like I need to consult ASSI 11 and possibly AASI 15, 34, 38, and 39.

Sandy,

Thank you so much for taking the time to look up the article!

Do you have an exact date for the article you found? Also you mention Edward Davey, but I was unclear how he came into the matter. Did the article simply say Edward was William's brother? (Edward is my great-great-grandfather.) Lastly, did it indicate whether he was tried at Quarter Sessions or Assizes?

I wonder what led to William stealing from his brothers? But this helps explain why his family left the Warmington area and fell on hard times.

What does two years and hard labor mean? Would he have served two years in prison and then have been transported to Australia? Or would his prison term have involved hard labour?

Again, thank you!

Thanks, Sandy!

Alan's website is great. Unfortunately his index doesn't go past 1846.

Last year I used it to find a couple of articles that mentioned cases in which one of my William Davey ancestors was the plaintiff (in one, someone had stolen grain from him; in the other it was pigs). I can't tell, however, whether they articles refer to the Wm Davey who ended up in jail in 1851 or to his father, also William and also a farmer.

Well I'm a dummy!  :-[

Thank you, Ricky, for pointing that out.

I see from that map that the area had a number of lodges. My dictionary says that one definition of "lodge" is "a house on an estate orig. for the use of a gamekeeper, caretaker, or porter." All three of my male Davey ancestors living at Warmington Lodge in 1841 are listed as farmers on the census record.

Thanks, all! To have a photo from the 1870s would be exciting, but I can be satisfied with one from the early 20th century too!

Thank you, Ricky. Yes, I've checked out the website but didn't find any reference to a lodge in Warmington.

Thank you, Valda!

I tracked down the appropriate NA locators and will proceed from there. I hope to have time to visit Kew when I'm in the UK next month. I also contacted the Northamptonshire archives office and am waiting on a reply.

I've been told this photograph is of my ancestor Arthur Davey (1862–?). I strongly suspect that Arthur died in 1887, and the person in the photograph appears quite young, so if it is him the picture was taken in the 1870s or 1880s.

Does that seem plausible?

I've sometimes wondered if the photograph wasn't actually of a more recent Arthur Davey (b. 1894).

Thanks for any and all help!

Several ancestors from Warmington appear in the 1841 census to be living at something called Warmington Lodge (see HO107/808/12 Folio 23 Page: 13).

I've been unable to trace this to a specific area or building in Warmington. Does anyone know what or where Warmington Lodge was/is?

Thank you!
