Family History Beginners Board / Re: Can Assizes records be accessed on-line?

Hi juddee

I'm not sure that you can access Berkshire Assizes online.
You need to get someone to search for you in England.
Newspaper articles on the trial may shed some light. What was he tried for? The trial will give the date of the incident, local newspapers around that time may also reveal something.
If you can find which gaol he was held at there maybe records with regards to visitors.

Good luck

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Stephen DeBusk & Stephen LeBusque - are they the same person?
« on: Saturday 30 October 04 00:40 BST (UK)  »
 Hi
I am trying to locate the family of my convict ancestor, Stephen LE BUSQUE his alias on conviction was Stephen COPLEY.

On his convict records it states he was a native of Sheffield.  He was tried at the Derby Assizes in 15 July 1826.  He was born circa 1803.  The closest person I have found is Stephen DE BUSK son of John DE BUSK and Mary FRANCE christened at St Peter's Cathedral, Sheffield 28 Sep 1803.
My problem is I can't confirm they are the same person.  DE BUSK name doesn't appear in the census with any regularity.

I have not been able to find a marriage or a death for Stephen DE BUSK

Has anyone got any suggestions on where I can go from here.

Cheers

Hi Troods

Richard PITT's will mentions a Thomas PITT.  This is where I connect. Thomas's Sisters all married convicts.
Maria PITT married a convict Stephen LE BUSQUE (My GGG Grandparents)
Catherine PITT married Thomas FIRMAN
Margaret PITT married Thomas ALEXANDER

Their parents were Alice & Theophilus PITT

Hi Troods

I have VDL convicts in my ancestry to and I found the Archives Office of Tasmania very helpful in locating the relevent CON ref.'s and copies of the shipping information required and information on census. The census can be traced on line
http://www.archives.tas.gov.au/
I wrote to a research facility in England, giving them the date of the trial and where and they sent me copies of the Trial and newspaper reports.

Oddly enough I have a copy of your Richard PITT's will as he is connected to my family.
The Application marry refernce I have for Phillis (Heasman) PITT to marry Robert REYNOLDS states she came free.
I was unware that Richard was a convict, I only have him as being a Licensed Victualler.
